Jewish couple in Belgium afraid to leave house after antisemitic harassment and death threats

A Jewish woman named Nicole, 43, and her husband, have been left afraid to leave their house after persistent antisemitic harassment.

Nicole and her husband have lived in Marchienne-au-Pont for two and a half years, the last two months of which has seen them ensure antisemitic harassment, including death threats, damage to their home, verbal abuse and physical aggression.

Recently a Star of David was painted onto their door. The couple also appears to have been sent large amounts of hate mail.

“A few people have discovered that we are Jews. Since then we have been threatened with death” she said. Their treatment highlights the increasingly hostile environment that many Jews are subjected to across mainland Europe.

Miami Beach resident accused of plotting to burn down condo to “kill all the Jews”

Mr Walter Stopler, aged 72 was arrested by police in Miami on Thursday 12th July, after h he allegedly tried to burn down his condominium building in order to “kill all the Jews” according to the police report. Mr Stopler now reportedly faces charges of attempted arson and attempted murder.

Mr Stopler, angry after having recently been served eviction notice, allegedly told another resident that he planned to pour gasoline down the drain line of the building, ignite it and then padlock the building’s fire hoses to stop firefighters from extinguishing the flames.

Miami Beach police officer Ernesto Rodriguez stated that officers received a credible tip that Mr Stopler was planning to burn down The Pavilion residences on Collins Avenue. When the police arrived, they found Mr Stopler in the parking garage of the building, with two plastic containers filled with fuel in a shopping cart. A further eight plastic containing fuel were found in a garbage chute dumpster.

Investigators found that the gasoline had been poured down the chute from the 15th floor – the floor on which Mr Stopler resided. Upon being found with the gasoline, Mr Stopler told the police that “I bought the gas to make a small BBQ”, according to the arrest affidavit.

A storage room was later found by detectives holding 27 additional containers filled with various substances such as gasoline, sulphur powder and potassium nitrate.

The state attorney’s office is to decide whether to pursue further charges against Mr Stopler of a hate crime.

Palestinian attacks Jewish professor in Germany before police allegedly beat the victim

A 20-year-old Palestinian male has allegedly attacked a 50-year-old Jewish Israeli professor in the German city of Bonn in an antisemitic attack.

Astonishingly, the attack took place in front of police. When the victim called out for help, the police allegedly jumped in and punched him in the face.

Ursula Brohl-Sowa, Bonn’s police chief, described the incident as a “horrible and regrettable misunderstanding”, but this will be little comfort to the victim, who has since left the city. Antisemitic violence has seen a steep increase across Germany in recent months.

Jewish siblings set upon by blade-wielding assailant in Melbourne in suspected antisemitic attack

Two siblings dressed in traditional Jewish clothing, a 25-year-old woman and her 22-year-old brother were stabbed in an unprovoked attack in Melbourne on 19th May.

The attacker is believed to have hit the man over the head before slashing the woman with some sort of blade in cheek.

The man was treated on the scene, but his sister required hospital treatment.

Anti-Defamation Commission Chairman Dr Abramovich condemned the attack, telling a local newspaper that:

“If this assault, which is shocking on many levels, was in fact driven by antisemitism, it should be investigated as a hate crime”.

Wilson Jacob adds that police are investigating whether the incident was racially motivated.

Antisemitic incidents in Ukraine double in a year, nationalists claim it is a Russian plot

According to research from the World Jewish Congress, antisemitic incidents in Ukraine doubled over the course of the last year.

The WJC said that it recorded at least 130 antisemitic incidents in the country in the last year, twice what was recorded in the preceding 12 month period. The incidents range from vandalism to far-right marches and verbal abuse to physical violence. The country is home to around 350,000 Jews.

Some domestic forces in Ukraine have dismissed the report, even suggesting it is a Kremlin plot to portray all Ukrainians as fascists. Across Ukraine, there has reportedly been a backlash against the report, particularly from nationalists, who are a growing political force in the country. Unfortunately, unless people are able to swallow their pride and acknowledge that antisemitism is a growing problem, there will be little chance of defeating it. Ukraine, which does not have clearly-defined hate crime legislation, often sees racially and religiously motivated incidents investigated as mere hooliganism.

Everyday Antisemitism has recently covered several incidents in Ukraine, including an attempted arson attack on a Synagogue, a General calling to “destroy” Jews, a “national hero” peddling antisemitic conspiracy theories and saying she doesn’t like “k*kes”, as well as a swastika being carved into the chest of a Jewish activist – falling just within the catchment period of the report, a fact demonstrating that those detracting from the claims in the report by indicating that there have been no violent incidents are clearly incorrect.

This sadly fits a general trend, which has seen antisemitic crime rising across Europe and beyond.

The majority of the incidents are never reported in the English language or outside Ukraine.

Orthodox Jew beaten in the street in Brooklyn mere days after similar incident

The Anti-Defamation League are offering a $5000 reward after another Orthodox Jewish man was beaten on the streets of Brooklyn.

Menachem Moskowitz, a 52-year-old Orthodox man, was attacked at around 12:30pm on Shabbat when he was leaving his Synagogue in Brooklyn. Two attackers approached the man, punched him in the face and then began to choke him. The man was saved by two onlookers who came to his aid and helped him to escape.

According to the victim, he “greeted him hello. Next thing I know he said ‘I don’t like Jews. Who were you talking to?’He put me in a headlock and I’m trying to maneuver out of him. In the meantime, I’m screaming ‘Help! Help! Help! Help!’ He says, ‘You don’t need help. I’m going to kill you right here'”.

The attacker allegedly called the victim a “fake Jew”, presumably in reference to the antisemitic “Khazar” conspiracy theory that claims that Ashkenazi Jews are not descended from the Ancient Israelites despite the overwhelming evidence. There are historic inter-communal tensions between religious Jews and African Americans in the Brooklyn area, which unfortunately appear to be resurfacing.

The victim was left with a black eye, a broken rib and various scratches and bruises. Thankfully there was a nurse on the scene to assist him.

Last week a Hasidic man was attacked in Crown Heights, in what is believed to be an antisemitic attack.

Irvine man charged for allegedly creating “kill list” of local Jews and planning to target Synagogues

Nicholas Wesley Rose, 26, of Irvine, California, has been charged by police for allegedly creating a “kill list” of local Jews.

Rose appeared to be in the preparatory stages of an antisemitic terrorist attack and was also found in position of weapons and ammunition. Local prosecutors said that, as well as the “kill list” he had also penned an article called “killing my first Jew”. Police were alerted by a family member, after Rose described his desire to kill Jews to them.

Police allegedly found antisemitic pamphlets in his house.

As well as details of a local Synagogue, police also found details of two Eastern Orthodox churches.

Rose will appear on April 27 charged with a string of hate crimes, and is being held on $500,000 bail.

Hasidic man attacked in Crown Heights in “possible” hate crime

Police at New York’s 71st precinct are investigating a possible hate crime after a Hasidic Jew was attacked on the street.

Shomrim Crown Heights have said that a 42-year-old Hasidic man who was visiting Crown Heights for Shabbat was attacked in the early hours of the morning by three African-American men just a block away from the Chabad HQ at Eastern Parkway.

The assailants allegedly approached the man shouting “do you want to fight?” before punching and kicking him.

Whilst the police are considering the possibility that this was an antisemitic attack, the man was accompanied with another Jew who was not attacked. Nonetheless, Rabbi Eli Cohen noted “there’s no other motive” before expressing his hope that the attack is a one-off and doesn’t represent an escalation in community tensions in the area. Antisemitic violence in the area is quite common.

The victim was treated in hospital before filing a police report after Shabbat ended.

Israeli man beaten to death in Russia, survived by heavily pregnant wife

Mikhail Verevskoy, a 27-year-old Russian-Israeli, has succumbed to his injuries five days after a savage beating he received on a street in St Petersburg.

Verevskoy suffered traumatic brain injuries, broken ribs and facial bones, and internal injuries in what the police believe may be an antisemitic attack.

36-year-old Ahmed Kharsha was arrested and subsequently released on bail in connection with the attack, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs have said.

Verevsky was born in Russia, where he studied civil engineering before making Aliyah in 2010 and serving in the IDF. He returned to Russia in 2012 and became active in a local Synagogue. He is survived by his wife who is heavily pregnant and expected to give birth shortly.

The Israeli Embassy have offered his family assistance, but have said they are waiting for the conclusion of the Russian police investigation before commenting further.

If the investigation shows that this was indeed an antisemitic attack, it will be the second antisemitic murder in Europe in just over a week, following the apparent antisemitic murder of a Holocaust survivor in Paris.

Holocaust survivor found stabbed to death in burning apartment in what appears to be antisemitic murder

An 85-year-old Jewish Holocaust survivor has been found dead in her apartment in Paris, having been stabbed 11 times and her apartment having been set ablaze.

The attack took place in her apartment in  Avenue Philippe Auguste.

National Bureau for Vigilance Against Antisemitism have confirmed that suicide has been ruled out and that a suspect is being questioned in relation to what is almost certainly an antisemitic attack.

An attack of this nature is yet another escalation in what is becoming an intolerable situation for Jews in the French capital. That such a fate could befall a Holocaust survivor in twenty-first century Europe is an indictment of contemporary French society, where antisemitism has become an accepted part of life for the Jews who have decided to remain in the country.  If what is suspected about the motives of this attack are confirmed, it will verify what many have known for some time now; France has become inhospitable to Jewish life.

Last year, Jewish pensioner Sarah Halimi was beaten by her Islamist neighbour and thrown off the balcony in her own home to her death three stories below. The authorities had initially refused to label the attack antisemitic, despite reports that she had been subject to verbal antisemitic abuse by her assailant prior to the incident. The matter is awaiting trial and will be prosecuted as a hate crime.

Paris: 14-year-old Jewish boy beaten by gang who stole his kippah after leaving Synagogue on Purim

In yet another violent antisemitic incident in the French capital, a 14-year-old Jewish boy has been subjected to a harrowing antisemitic attack in Paris.

The victim was leaving his Synagogue on Purim, a holiday during which Jews celebrate the events depicted in Megillat Esther, in which Jews in the Persian empire survived an attempt to exterminate them.

The victim has said he was surrounded by a group of youths who beat him, including hitting him with a tree branch, breaking his glasses, before stealing his Kippah and running off. They reportedly shouted antisemitic insults as they carried out the attack.

Four youths have been detained by the police, who have confirmed that they believe the attack to be antisemitic in nature.

Suspected antisemitic acid attack on Jewish baby in France

The 14-month-old daughter of a Rabbi in Lyon was rushed to hospital after acid was left in her pram.

The incident occurred on Monday. The baby was taken into hospital after her grandmother noticed burns on her body. She has suffered burns on her back and thighs, but is not thought to be in any danger.

The acid is thought to have been placed in the pram when it was left in a communal part of the grandmother’s apartment block. The acid appears to have been left in the inside of the pram whilst it was empty.

The police are considering the possibility that this was an antisemitic attack. A police spokesman said: “we take this case very seriously. But, for now, it is still unclear whether this case is an act of antisemitism, a neighborhood quarrel or gratuitous damage committed by thugs”.

The Rabbi alerted the police, who have taken the pram in as evidence.

Alleged killer of 17, including 5 Jews, in school shooting trained with neo-Nazi group in Florida

Nikolas Cruz, a 19-year-old orphan accused of murdering 17 people in a school shooting, reportedly trained with neo-Nazi groups before allegedly committing the shooting spree.

Cruz allegedly killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Florida, a school with a high Jewish population, with an AR-15 he legally purchased.

During proceedings against Cruz, in which he has been held without bail on 17 counts of murder, the leader of the Florida-based neo-Nazi group Republic of Florida has admitted that Cruz trained with them.

Jordan Jereb, whose group wants Florida to become a “white ethno-state” said that Cruz acted alone and suggested that “trouble with a girl” contributed to the killing spree.

At least 5 of the victims have been identified as Jewish, but some report that at least 7 of them are.

Rabbi Shuey Biston of Chabad of Parkland said “this is a small community, where nearly half of the population is Jewish, so everyone has been touched by what has happened”.

Not all victims of the shooting have been identified, and some people are still missing.

Resurgent far right led to 4 antisemitic crimes per day in Germany in 2017

Police recorded 1453 antisemitic crimes in Germany in 2017, a figure amounting to around 4 each day.

According to the police the vast majority of these crimes came from members of the far right, a fact that is unsurprising. Despite the fact that Jews face antisemitism from the far left and Islamists as well as the far right, Germany is experiencing a troubling resurgence of the far right, a group that is unrepentant and militant in its hatred of Jews, with far right individuals often centring their world view around antisemitism.

The crimes include 32 acts of violence, 160 cases of property damage and 898 cases of antisemitic incitement.

In 1377 cases, 95% of the crimes, the police determined that the far right was responsible.

Despite commentary from abroad often suggesting that immigration is directly responsible for antisemitism in Germany, only 33% of offenders were foreign-born and only 25 cases were “religiously motivated”, amongst which Islamist crimes are included.

The author of the report believes that the majority of antisemitic crimes go unreported, which paints a deeply disturbing picture of the extent of antisemitism in contemporary Germany.

8-year-old Jewish boy attacked near Paris

An 8-year-old Jewish boy was attacked in the Paris suburb of Sarcelles yesterday, in what President Macron has decried as an antisemitic attack.

Two assailants, who according to the victim were around 15 years of age, attacked the boy whenhe was on his way to after-school tutoring. The victim was wearing a kippah when he was attacked.

Local prosecutors have told the press that they are treating the crime as antisemitic.

President Macron wrote on his Twitter account “An 8-year-old boy was attacked today in Sarcelles. Because he was wearing a kippa. Every time a citizen is attacked because of his age, his appearance or his religion, the whole country is being attacked” before continuing “And it is the whole country that stands, especially today, alongside the French Jews to fight each of these despicable acts, with them and for them”.

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb described the attack as “cowardly aggression…contrary to our most fundamental values”.

Sarcelles is nicknamed “Little Jerusalem” for its high Jewish population, but antisemitic crimes targeting Jews and Jewish institutions in the area are disturbingly common.

Three weeks ago, a 10-year-old Jewish girl had her face slashed in Paris.

Suspect accused of murdering Jewish student, stabbing him 20 times, posted far-right content on social media

A suspect who is alleged to have murdered Blaze Bernstein, a promising 19-year-old Jewish Ivy League student, allegedly shared antisemitic content on his social media pages.

Samuel Woodward, 20, who knew Bernstein from high school, is accused of killing the University of Pennsylvania student. Woodward claimed that the two arranged to “hang out” over Snapchat, but that Bernstein tried to kiss him. It is alleged that he had previously used a homphobic slur about Bernstein.

Investigators have noted several inconsistencies in Woodward’s story.

Whilst some had suspected the alleged murder was antisemitic in nature, these claims appear to have been lent weight by the discovery of far-right content on Woodward’s social media. Woodward recreated a scene from American History X, in which the main character, a neo-Nazi skinhead bearing a Swastika tattoo portrayed by Edward Norton, brutally murders a black man on the street.

A source has now approached the New York Times to say that he had previously posted White Nationalist content on social media too.  A source reportedly “close” to Woodward has claimed “Anti-Semitism and homophobia were certainly aspects of his ideology”.

He also allegedly posted a rape fantasy about an Asian teacher.

Woodward is facing a charge of murder. Police are yet to confirm whether a hate crime charge is to be added to this.

The image of Woodward recreating the murder scene from American History X is pictured below.

Bernstein’s body was found days after he was due to return to University. He had aspirations to continue his studies at Medical School and to qualify as a doctor.

Sustained assault on 10 year old Jewish girl at her school: an indication of a wider malaise in French society?

At the beginning of October 2017, a ten year old Jewish girl was verbally abused and beaten up so badly by her classmates, for several days in a row, because she was Jewish, that she sustained injuries to her ribs and abdomen and had to be hospitalised.

The girl is French and attended a school in the 18th arrondissement in Paris, where most of her classmates were Muslim.

The girl’s mother, who wished to remain anonymous, said, One of the schoolboys, named Ishmael, beat her after saying ‘I do not love you because you are Jewish.’ The boy also told her: not to pronounce his name Ishmael, for it is the name of a prophet.”

The mother reported the incident to France’s antisemitism watchdog, the National Bureau for Vigilance Against Antisemitism (BNVCA). Paris’s Local Education Authority confirmed to the BNVCA that they would take the incident seriously, and would transfer the girl to a school of her choice.

According to an account on 6th October 2017 by Christians United for Israel (CUFI), the child’s mother added that the family had suffered a psychological shock and needed help. She said that her daughter had nightmares and was constantly afraid of being assaulted.

The CUFI article sets out what looks to be a pattern for the persecution of Jews in France:

  • An increasing number of Jewish families are moving their children from public (state) schools because of growing antisemitism from Muslims in state schools

  • In 1970 only 7,000 French children attended Jewish schools. Today, there are 35,000 Jewish children in Jewish schools in France. In addition, 35,000 Jewish children attend private Christian schools

We also learn that 40,000 French Jews have emigrated to Israel since 2006, and the exodus peaked after the attacks on Charlie Ebdo and Hyper Cacher supermarket. Approximately 10% to 35% had returned to France subsequently but it is believed that the attacks on French Jews since 2006 had acted as a catalyst.

It is suggested that there are parallels between the plight of French Jews and Jews in the UK as regards authorities’ apparent inability, (and what looks to be unwillingness in certain cases in the UK), to act to the full extent to protect their Jewish citizens from attack and punish the perpetrators of such attacks to the full extent of the law. Campaign Against Antisemitism’s latest research has shown that attacks on Jews and Jewish establishments are increasing but prosecutions are falling, and where perpetrators are prosecuted, the sentences handed down are so lenient as almost to be laughable.

At a micro level, the French 10 year old has had to leave the school whose staff had so consummately failed to keep her safe. Just last week, Everyday Antisemitism reported on a mob attack on a group of Jews who were leaving their Synagogue, the latest in a long line of examples of serious antisemitic violence. At a macro level, Jewish emigration from France is increasing, ostensibly for the same reason. Somehow, hatred of Jews has become acceptable in France and the UK to the extent that those whom Jews rely on to keep them safe seem to be almost incapable of doing so, therefore Jews are leaving.

What lessons can be learned from these events before it is too late?

Synagogue goers in Paris reportedly attacked by mob of Muslim youths

Several members of a Synagogue in  Garges-les-Gonesse, a Paris suburb, have reportedly been attacked by a mob of around 20 Muslim youths.

The mob apparently were shouting “screw the Jews” and “Allahu Akbar”, as well as various antisemitic slurs.

At least one was armed, with eyewitnesses claiming that one used tear gas.

Several attempted to climb the wall to gain entry to the Synagogue itself.

The attackers were reportedly aged around 15 and above. The four Jews who were attacked managed to alert the police who arrived quickly, but not before the assailants had scattered, leaving them badly shaken up. The attackers are yet to be apprehended or identified.

This is yet another shocking example of the escalating antisemitism in France. Several major incidents that we have covered can be viewed here. These include the allegedly antisemitic murder of a French Jew by her Muslim neighbour, a French champion of “co-existence” calling on Hitler to “kill the Jews”, and a Jewish man having his finger sawn off by antisemitic attackers. There are also many incidents of vandalism, including “hundreds” of tombstones in a Jewish cemetery being destroyed or damaged, attempted arson of Synagogues, and many incidents which go unreported.

“Gang” attacks Jewish 12-year-old on his way home from Synagogue in Crown Heights

A group described as a “gang of local thugs” have allegedly attacked a 12-year-old Charedi child who was on his way back from Synagogue on Shabbat.

The attack took place on Eastern Parkway, across the road from the famous 770 building which homes the headquarters of Chabad, a Chasidic movement that is famed for its tireless outreach activities.

The boy was apparently attacked by seven or eight African American “youths” without any apparent provocation.

There is a history of tension between the African America and Jewish communities in the area.

The boy’s father said that his “son said that he understood something was going to happen and as he was thinking what he should do, they suddenly pounced with one of them slapping him so hard that he fell to the ground, while a second one hitting him in the head”.

The police are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.

Recently we reported that a blind Orthodox woman was the victim of an antisemitic attack in the neighbourhood.

On Thursday a woman was arrested for allegedly attacking two Charedi girls in the area.

The recent spate of violence antisemitic incidents obviously represents an alarming escalation in antisemitism in the area which runs the risk of escalating further without police action to ensure that Jewish communities are safe. There is also a pressing need to ensure that relationships between different communities in the Brooklyn suburb do not deteriorate.

Blind Orthodox woman attacked in Crown Heights

An Orthodox Jewish woman in Crown Heights, a heavily Jewish neighbourhood in Brooklyn, New York, was allegedly the victim of an antisemitic attack late in September.

The woman, who is legally blind, had an antisemitic slur shouted at her by an unknown assailant, who then went on to rip off her wig, which is an item of religious significance as many religious Jewish women will cover their hair after they are married.

She was walking near Eastern Parkway and Schenectady Avenue around 2:30 p.m. last Monday when she was attacked.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, antisemitic hate crimes in New York have risen 40% in the last year.

The police do not have a suspect in the case yet. The ADL is offering a $2500 reward for information leading to an arrest or conviction.

Haredi man allegedly attacked by recent convert to Islam in Antwerp who hurled antisemitic abuse at him

Shomrim have confirmed that there is an investigation into an alleged antisemitic assault in Antwerp.

A Haredi man was walking home from his Synagogue after the Kabbalat Shabbat service on Friday night when he was accosted by a man who is reportedly a recent convert to Islam.

The assailant allegedly hurled antisemitic abuse at him and punched him in the face, leaving him requiring medical treatment.

The police arrived promptly and arrested the man, who is now under investigation.

Jewish institutions in Antwerp require extra police protection due to the high probability of antisemitic attacks. The image for this article, showing a Haredi man cycling in Antwerp as an armed guard watches on, was not taken on Shabbat.

Worshippers spat at, verbally abused after leaving Nuremberg Synagogue

Three worshippers outside the Nuremberg Synagogue were spat at on Friday after leaving the Kabbalat Shabbat service.

At least one of the victims was recognisably Jewish as he was still wearing his Kippah. However, the three were only a few metres from the entrance of the Synagogue.

They were spat at from a residential building, and some verbal abuse was shouted. At least two of them were hit.

The perpetrator is yet to be apprehended, despite the incident having taken place from a residential building.

Brooklyn man left needing stitches after defending elderly Jewish couple from attackers on subway

New York man  Jean Wolfman was left requiring ten stitches after he was beaten for defending an elderly Jewish couple from attackers on the subway.

Wolfman told reporters that the couple were harassed by a group of dancers who were asking them for money. One of the dancers said to the elderly man “I will slap that beanie off your head” and proceeded to hit the kippah off his head. Whilst the confrontation itself wasn’t necessarily antisemitic, as soon as the attacker slapped the kippah from a Jewish man’s head, it clearly becomes so. Wolfman told the attackers to leave the couple alone and the dancers exited the train and Wolfman, who is a street performer, confronted them about their actions.

Wolfman tried to resolve the situation peacefully when they didn’t take kindly to him trying to explain why their actions were unacceptable, challenging the attackers to a dance off, pulling out his hula hoop. They punched him, hit him with the hula hoop and smashed his guitar. Even after the attackers dispersed, one sneaked up behind him again and punched him from behind.

The police have arrested one male suspect and are seeking two others. Wolfman has said he would do the same again, emphasising that he thinks it is important to stand up for his fellow New Yorkers.

Anti-Zionist attempts to set pro-Israel campaigner on fire in Berlin

The Berlin Police are conducting a manhunt after a pro-Israel marcher faced an attempt to set her on fire early this week at a march to commemorate Israeli soldiers who have been killed in combat, and terror victims.

The attack happened when the woman, a German-Israeli citizen, was wearing an Israel flag over her shoulders. The assailant allegedly attempted to set the flag ablaze, but given that the victim was wearing the flag, this is more than just a case of property damage or arson, themselves criminal acts, and is instead a clear attempted act of violence.

Despite the attack, the woman wishes to continue pro-Israel activism.

A physical attack on a person for merely displaying the Israeli flag, the flag of the country where half of the world’s Jews live, is clearly antisemitic, as it is a case of “applying double standards” to the State of Israel that are not applied to any other nation.

Antisemitic thugs attempt to carve swastika into Ukrainian activist’s chest

Last month three attackers set upon Ludmila Daschizkia in a street in Uman, Ukraine, removed a piece of her clothing, and attempted to carve a Swastika into her chest in a shocking antisemitic attack.

Dashizkia is an activist who is well known in Ukraine for her support of Breslov Hasidim who come to visit Rabbi Nachman’s grave in the city, which last year we reported had been desecrated with a pig’s head and blood by antisemites.

Dashizkia managed to escape with only minor injuries, but the attackers, if caught, may only have to pay a fine.

She commented: “I do not know who it was, but it’s an act of intimidation. It could be that the attackers were local neo-Nazis, but I’m not sure about it … Someone might have wanted to provoke an anti-Semitic scandal. I told the police, but I’m afraid they will not find the attackers”.

The wounds she received before her escape are picture below. It seems quite clear that it was an attempt to carve a swastika into her chest.

Tunisian arrested in Italy after waving knife at police and screaming “you are Jews. I will kill you all”.

A Tunisian man has been arrested in Bologna, Italy, after it was alleged that he shouted antisemitic threats at police and injured two of them.

Passers by had called the police after the man shouted curses in Arabic. The police arrived and found him sat on the steps of a Church. The 30-year-old Tunisian man, when apprehended by police, brandished a knife and screamed “you are Jews. I will kill you all”.

He was handcuffed, but allegedly still managed to injure two of the police officers, causing injuries that will keep them away from their duties for several days. He was allegedly arrested with an illegal substance on his person.

Bologna is home to a small, historic Jewish community. It is fortunate that this man was apprehended by police officers who were capable of detaining him before he was able to carry out any direct attacks on Jewish residents of the city.

Paris Jewish woman found dead after allegedly being thrown from her own balcony by Arab neighbour

Paris police have opened a murder investigation after a 66-year-old Charedi woman in Paris was found dead on the street on Monday night in the 11th arrondissement of Paris.

Lucy Halimi was allegedly thrown from the balcony of her third-story apartment following an argument with her neighbour, a 27-year-old Arab, who has since been arrested by police. He has apparently been transferred to psychiatric services. Witnesses apparently heard the suspect screaming that he was going to kill her shortly before her death.

Some news sources have claimed that the man was heard shouting “Allahu Ackbar”, but it is not known if these reports are reliable. If so, this incident looks like far more than an argument between neighbours that went wrong. However, the true motive is not currently known. However, given the increasingly troubling situation for Jews in France, it would be foolish not to consider antisemitism to be a genuine possibility.

Two French Jewish organisations released a joint statement saying that they “will do their best to shed light on this very sad event and to support the family. We will keep you informed”.

We wish Halimi’s family a long life and offer our most sincere condolences.

Germany: Jewish boy forced out of school after 4 months of antisemitic bullying, violent attacks

A British-Jewish family in Berlin has been forced to pull their 14-year-old son out of his school after he was subjected to months of antisemitic bullying.

The boy was sent to Friedenauer Gemeinschaftsschule, a school they were attracted to initially because of its diverse pupils, many of whom are from an Arab or Turkish background. However, when the son mentioned he was Jewish, one pupil said to him “Listen, you are a cool dude but I can’t be friends with you, Jews are all murderers”.

The mother said that verbal abuse quickly escalated into physical violence, and this month “he was attacked and almost strangled, and the guy pulled a toy gun on him that looked like a real gun. And the whole crowd of kids laughed. He was completely shaken”.

The mother had approached the Headteacher of the school, asking whether he could bring in an organisation to educate the children about antisemitism, as well as other forms of xenophobia and racism, but despite him appearing open to the idea, no action was taken. The mother’s parents are Holocaust survivors who have spoken at the school.

There have been indications for over a decade that antisemitism was driving Jewish students out of state schools and to Jewish schools, with Deidre Berger suggesting in 2015 that more and more Jewish students were attending Jewish schools for fear of antisemitism and in 2006, Der Spiegel running a report on Jewish schoolchildren who had been pushed out of secular schools by antisemitism.

According to the JC, the Moses Mendelssohn Jewish High School in Berlin receives 6 to 10 applications each year from Jewish students who have similarly been forced out of other schools by antisemitism, indicating a huge problem in the city’s schools. Aaron Eckstaedt, the school’s headteacher, says that parents are often concerned with the lack of formal response from those schools, and that the complaints are often centred around students of an Arab or Turkish background.

It is not known whether these incidents are being investigated by the police.

French freemason beaten by hammer-wielding attacker shouting “Jew! Jew! Jew!”

Christophe Habas, a senior Freemason in France, was beaten by a woman in Paris as he walked to a metro station.

The woman allegedly shouted “Jew!” repeatedly as she beat him with a hammer, before fleeing.

Habas was fortunately not badly injured, but clearly an attack with a hammer could have led to serious injury, meaning that he had a lucky escape.

It isn’t known if Habas is Jewish, but Freemasons often feature in antisemitic conspiracy theories, and were also killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust. Antisemitic conspiracies from the far left, the far right and from Islamists often mention freemasons and Jews in the same breath.

Habas has apparently recently returned from a trip to Israel, which received media attention in France where there are over 50,000 freemasons.

Francis Kalifat, the president of the French Jewish group the CRIF remarked: “this assault reminds us that we need to fight with uncompromising firmness against antisemitic discourse, and all other forms of hate and exclusion”.

Neo-Nazi finally faces trial, after 2 year delay, for threatening to massacre Jewish schoolchildren

David Lenio is finally being charged with allegedly threatening to massacre Jewish schoolchildren, after a delay of almost two years.

Lenio, a White Nationalist from Montana, is alleged to have said that he wishes to “execute 30 or more grade school students”, put “two in the head of a Rabbi or Jewish leader”, and said that the “USA needs a Hitler to rise to power”.

He is also alleged to have tweeted:

“I think every jew on the planet deserves to be killed for what kikes have done to our #dollar and cost of living Killing jews > wage #slave”

“I’m not even opposed to shooting up a random school like that sandy hoax stunt only realer, to voice my displeasure with being a wage slave”

“Let’s make national news, I david lenio know israel did 9/11 and I am so poor that I want to shoot up a kalispell Montana public school …”

Lenio appears to have been arrested in 2015, and subsequently released on a plea bargain which saw felony charges for intimidation reduced to a misdemeanour, in a manner which has been called into question.  Despite repeatedly referring to himself as a “wage slave”, Lenio appears to have been released into the custody of his wealthy investment banker father.

As a condition of this release, he was ordered not to use social media, a restriction which he has allegedly consistently breached. Despite him initially being apprehended with several weapons, there does not appear to be any evidence that he was disarmed as a condition of his release.

Fortunately, it appears that Lenio will finally come before a Judge this month to answer felony charges. The fact that it has taken this long, despite him apparently having consistently fetishised violence, particularly against Jews, is a rather worrying failure of the Justice and Security systems in the United States. This is a man who repeatedly threatened to kill Jews, against whom a case was dropped in an apparently clandestine manner, and who appeared to be heavily armed. Indeed, it seems quite miraculous that he did not carry out any of the attacks that he threatened, given that the only engagement he was forced to have with the authorities was to report where he was living if he moved. We can only hope that he finally meets with the full force of the law and that prosecutors are more proactive against bringing similar threats to justice in the future.

Jewish man has his finger sawn off by antisemitic attackers in brutal attack on two brothers in Paris

The National Bureau for Vigilance Against Antisemitism in France has released a report which claims that two Jewish men were briefly abducted, beaten and one had his finger sawn off in Paris. The Bureau’s report is based on several police reports.

The alleged attack occurred in Bondy, a suburb in Paris.  The two men, who are brothers, and who are the sons of a local Jewish leader were forced off the road by the assailant whilst driving. They are both visibly Jewish as they wear kippot.

The assailants shouted various antisemitic slurs at them, which included “Dirty Jews, you’re going to die!”

The two brothers were forced out of their car and several men of “Middle Eastern appearance” emerged from a “hookah café”.

The men proceeded to severely beat the two brothers. One attacker then allegedly sawed off one of the Jewish men’s fingers.

Both brothers were hospitalised and were reportedly in a state of shock after the attack.

This story comes against a backdrop of increasing antisemitism in France. Last year we reported that a 13-year-old Jewish boy has his kippah turn off and was beaten by attackers shouting “dirty Jew” in Paris. In December, another Jew was beaten by attackers also shouting “dirty Jew”, also in Paris. In Strasbourg last year, an Orthodox Jew was beaten by attackers shouting “dirty Jew, we will kill you”, and in a separate incident a Chabad Rabbi in the city was stabbed by an assailant shouting “Allahu Ackbar”, with the attacker having previously committed a similar crime. There have also been high profile terrorist attacks against Jews in France, including the 2012 massacre at a Jewish school and a shooter killing 4 shoppers and injuring nine at a Kosher supermarket. Though Jewish communities are heavily guarded in France, and indeed elsewhere, nobody can have their safety guaranteed at all times, and several incidents have called into question the provision of security, not least the assignment of a police officer who has links to multiple antisemites to the protection of a Jewish communal leader.

The situation in France is fast becoming intolerable. It is impossible for a minority community to flourish under constant threat of serious physical harm, which is evidenced by the sheer number of French Jews fleeing the country, with many making Aliyah whilst others find refuge in London.  Over half of French Jews have expressed a desire to move to Israel and the country has been described as one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a Jew.

It is currently not known if any onlookers intervened.

The alleged attacker had a strong German accent, had cropped blonde hair, wore a blue jacket and was carrying a black bag or briefcase.

The victim is yet to be apprehended.

Jewish man slashed repeatedly with knife and beaten by neo-Nazis in Chile

The Chilean Jewish community, alongside with the Integration Movement and Liberation for Homosexuals (Movilh), have condemned an attack committed against a Jewish member of the Sexual Diversity Group.  He was reported to have suffered a range of physical and verbal attacks, for the sole reason of wearing a shirt depicting the flag of Israel.  The victim (Jorge Arce), has issued a statement following the ordeal, describing how his aggressors followed him: shouting profanities and anti-Semitic slurs, which subsequently descended into applications of physical violence, beginning with stone throwing and followed by beatings and slashing’s.

According to the victim, the assailants were wearing items identifying themselves to Neo-Nazism, thus affirming that the motivation for the attack was wholly antisemitic in origin, and clearly indicates that it wasn’t merely related to Zionism, but to the clear link to Jews and Judaism which the attackers would have inferred from the flag. However, even if the attack was merely motivated by his t-shirt, according to the International Definition of Antisemitism, “holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel” is antisemitic.

Whilst subjecting the victim to fist punches to the chest, the victim’s arms and legs were exposed and subsequently slashed with a knife, from which he suffered multiple cuts. Jorge Arce remarks that there were “40 marks” on his arms, several of which shall scar permanently; a poignant and harsh reminder of the wholly repugnant behaviour he was subject to, for the sole reason of being a Jew.

Movilh condemned the attack, stating the events “deserve total legal and social sanction” and adding that they will fully back any actions the Jewish community sees fit to take. In response to the event, the Jewish community of Chile have stated “we cannot allow more victims of hate in our country.” The incident has made clear the absolute necessity that attacks carried out on the basis of belief or personal identity are condemned, investigated and punished. Unfortunately, the shocking ordeal inflicted upon Jorge Arce offer a harrowing message to the world that the fight against antisemitism is far from won.

Woman and friends beaten up in Poland merely for mentioning Jews

Karolina Tobolska and her two friends were allegedly beaten up in Warsaw for merely mentioning Jews.

The group were allegedly attacked by friends of the bartender of the bar they were drinking in, Foksal Café. The bartender had told them to stop talking “about Jews” because “she is Catholic and doesn’t wish to listen about Jews”, shortly after which they were assaulted.

When the woman said that she had reported the attack on social media, she was bombarded with antisemitic comments.

However, yesterday the former Israeli ambassador Ryszard Schnepf organised for a large crowd of people to attend the cafe, many of whom wore kippot as a sign of solidarity.

The report comes form the Coordination Forum for Countering Antisemitism, which monitors reports of antisemitism worldwide.

France: Jewish man beaten by attackers shouting “dirty Jew”

A 30 year-old Jewish man, who was walking home from work, was beaten by a group of men on a street in Creteil, France, a suburb south of Paris.

Despite the fact that one of the attackers called the victim an antisemitic slur, a “dirty Jew”, the police have not classified the incident as an antisemitic attack, the local judiciary police have opened up an investigation and are currently trying to determine if the crime was motivated by antisemitism.

The crime occurred in the courthouse neighbourhood, an area that Jewish businesses helped develop. Petty criminals are known to frequent the area.

Haaretz reported that when the police showed the victim 120 photographs of local criminals, he was able to recognize one of his attackers. The Haaretz article also revealed that “police believe the same local thug attacked a non-Jewish man on the same day.”

Albert Elharrar, the leader of the Creteil Jewish community, told the press that “the local thugs” assaulted the victim, a father, who was “returning home from work”. The perpetrators “hit” [the victim] “from behind” and “threw him on the ground and beat him”.

Elharrar told Le Parisien that “the victim was brave enough to hit one of his aggressors back, which allowed him to try to escape, but they caught him.”

Creteil, which is the home to approximately 22,000 Jews, is one of France’s largest Jewish communities  As reported in Haaretz, Elharrar believes that, despite this attack, Creteil is a “safe” city for Jews. “This is a place where different communities live side by side”.

However, in the past three years, there has beenan antisemitic robbery and a rape, which motivated several Jewish families from Creteil to move to Israel. But Elharrar thinks that “it’s not because of Creteil itself, but [because of] the feeling of insecurity in France altogether”.

According to French Jewish leaders, antisemitism stills threatens the safety of Jews. In 2015, there were 808 assaults on Jews, a record high, which caused many French Jews to leave the country. But despite a 61% reduction of hate crimes against Jews in France in 2016, the Jewish community remains vigilant.

Therefore, it is of great concern that the Jewish man, who was attacked in Creteil, was called a “dirty Jew”. As Elharrar pointed out in the Haaretz article:”he wasn’t wearing any distinctive sign”, like a Jewish skull cap, that would have “identified him as Jewish”.

Unfortunately, there is not enough evidence, at this point in time, to determine if the attackers marked the victim as a Jew because they saw him  enter a synagogue, or a kosher supermarket. However, the fact that there was no obvious way to identify the man as Jewish opens up the disturbing possibility that the attackers could have been searching for victims in the Jewish community. The police must conclude their investigation before it is known if the attacker intentionally tracked the victim, in order to commit an antisemitic crime.

Dutch Muslim accused of threatening to behead Jews in Ireland

A 39-year-old Dutch Muslim is facing trial in Cork, Ireland, for threatening to kill two French nationals as well as threatening to behead Jews.

Jewish brothers attacked on Yom Kippur in New York

Two Jewish brothers wearing yarmulkes and prayer shawls were attacked around 3:45pm on 12th October 2016, report Rocco Parascandola and John Annese in the New York Daily News on 16th October,  2016. The writers note that police sources  state anti-semitic slurs, “fucking Jews”, were aimed at the brothers aged 19 and 23, and police are investigating whether this assault by three white men is a hate crime. The victims were leaving Yom Kippur prayer services in Brooklyn,  New York. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the Jewish year.

Also reporting about the incident on 16th October,  2016, The Times of Israel quoted Evan R. Bernstein, New York regional director of the Anti-Defamation League as having said:

“This appalling act of apparently hate-inspired violence is a sad reminder that despite the unprecedented freedom of religious practice that Jews enjoy today in America, there remains much work to be done  to combat the evils of anti-semitism and bigotry, including right here in New York City.”

“The fact that this occurred  at the most solemn time of year for Jews makes the incident even more disturbing.”

Armed attacker enters Moscow Synagogue

A man has broken into the Great Synagogue in Moscow during the Shabbat evening prayers on Saturday.

The attacker entered the Synagogue with a gun, perhaps a taser, and a cylinder of gas, asking to meet Chief Rabbi of Moscow, Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, president of the Conference of European Rabbis.

When he entered the Synagogue, there were around 150 worshippers present.

Security removed him and attempted to hold him on the other side of the road, but he injured one of the guards, briefly escaping before being arrested by the police.

Chief Rabbi Goldschmidt commented “The evening prayer was conducted as usual, and we will conduct the High Holiday prayers as usual. We work in conjunction with the Moscow police, and I bless the entire Jewish people that they should be ‘signed and sealed’ for a good year”.

Additional security is being arranged for the High Holy Days. Incidents such at these highlight just how vulnerable Jewish communities continue to be to acts of terrorism and violence.

Man pushed onto train tracks in antisemitic attack in Nuremberg

A 49-year-old man is currently on trial after he allegedly pushed another man and shouted antisemitic abuse on the Nuremberg subway.

The man shouted that his victim smelled and that he was Jewish. He pushed him over onto the train tracks and then stamped on his feet to prevent him from getting back onto the platform. Such a vicious attack could easily have led to death by electrocution or by being hit by an oncoming train.

It is not currently known whether or not the victim actually is Jewish. However, the use of Jews as a scapegoat and a go-to target for insults and attacks is obviously an extremely worrying manifestation of resurgent antisemitism.

The Langwasser station was the point at which many Jews from Nuremberg and Franconia started their journey to the extermination camps.

A verdict should come in the following days.

Sweden: Jewish woman beaten, hospitalised by female Muslim gang

CORRECTION: the following incident has not just happened, but in fact occurred in August 2016. We have decided to keep the article up as it was not as widely publicised as an incident this severe should have been.

A Swedish mother of four has allegedly been attacked by a Muslim gang for wearing a Star of David necklace.

TLV Faces, a Jewish news outlet, has reported that Anna Sjogren was attacked while walking through a neighbourhood with a high Muslim population.

Sjoren told the WZO Centre for Countering Antisemitism:

“A Muslim girl saw that I was wearing the Star of David on my neck and she started swearing at me and spat in my face. I got very upset and pushed her off”

“There were at least ten witnesses to the attack. All ten of them were wearing hijabs or scarfs in the colors of the PLO.  Some surrounding witnesses claim that I ‘tripped’ and fell and that no one hurt me. It’s just unbelievable.”

“Before we got to the hospital, one of the attackers gave me threatened me saying, ‘shut up or we’ll kill you.’”

She was apparently hit with a sharp object by another girl in the crowd. When she arrived at hospital she had been beaten so badly she could not talk or see.

Sjoren was initially afraid to go to the police, saying “I cannot go to the police. The worst thing is that they will get my name and address. They’ll know where to find me and know and know I am the Jew who reported it.”

Writing on her Facebook page, Sjoren said “The Star of David is extremely meaningful and significant. I will never take it down no matter what happens. When other Facebook users show support I will stand up proudly for Israel, I will never let any one silence me. Am Yisrael Chai. We will never forget and never forgive”.

Sjoren is due to speak to the Security Organisation of the Jewish Community on Monday.

A student from the King Solomon High School in East London has been rushed to hospital after being stabbed near to school premises.

It is unknown whether the attack was motivated by antisemitism, but he was stabbed outside a charity shop near to the school, which is known as being a Jewish school.

An eye witness told a local newspaper “there was a group of young boys and I think they were cycling…all I saw was a punch – I didn’t see the knife – and then a black boy fell down. Another black boy ran off.”

His injuries are not life-threatening.

The Community Security Trust are communicating with the school about the ongoing security situation.

Argentina: students attend club dressed as Nazis, abuse and attack Jews

Reports have circulated that several high school students in Argentina attended a club with Hitler mustaches and swastikas painted on them and wearing leathers. They attend a school in Lanus, a neighborhood of Buenos Aires.

The club was also host to several Jewish students from an ORT High School.

A mother of one of the Jewish boys spoke to Rádio Latina saying:

“at a certain point in the night, young people came wearing swastikas and had painted-on Hitler mustaches…my son and his friends complained and asked that they be taken out, but all the club management did was demand that the mustaches be washed off and that the swastikas be removed”

“They all ended up fighting, and everyone was kicked out of the club – not just the aggressors”

According to the Telegraph, the students who were dressed as Nazis also shouted “f*cking Jews” and “proudly” showed off their Nazi imagery when they realised there were Jewish students present.

Families of the Jewish students have condemned the club, saying that no students bearing Nazi imagery should have been allowed in in the first place.

Ariel Cohen Sabban, head of the Delegaiton of Argentine Jewish Associations, said that he would be happy to meet with the club’s manager, and commented:

“It’s neither a joke nor a grace. These symbols reflect an ideology which culminated in the assassination of six million Jews at the hands of the Nazis. If these kids are older than 16, then these kids could be sentenced to between a month to three years in prison for their actions, as this is a crime in Argentina. We have to be alert because we are beginning new hot beds of anti-Semitism…the state’s drive to combat this phenomenon, specifically through education, is very important”.

The event occurred in the resort of San Carlos de Bariloche, which is in the Andes. The town was a hiding place to several Nazis after the conclusion of World War Two, including Erich Priebke, and several conspiracy theories hold that Hitler and Eva Braun survived and secretly fled their after the war.

French Jews pushed out of public schools by Antisemitism

Haaretz has reported that French Jews are being pushed out of the French schooling system by a culture of prevalent antisemtism.

One Jewish parent said that, despite having been educated in a French public school some years prior, the situation is now so bad that “anti-Semitic bullying means it would be too damaging for any Jewish kid you put there”.

Thirty years ago the majority of French Jews sent their children to public schools. The figure is now at only one third. In Paris, which has the largest population of Jews in France, almost all the children attend either private schools or Jewish schools.

French Jews have cited a “bad atmosphere of harassment, insults and assaults” for the change, as well as the growth of Jewish education that has gone along with increasing religious observance.

Whilst the incidents are usually ‘only’ instances of general bullying, some have involved serious intimidation, physical violence and death threats. Other incidents have included spraying a Jewish student with deodorant to ‘simulate’ a gas chamber, and a Jewish student being corned by classmates and being threatened with stabbing.

These incidents go alongside a steep increase in antisemitism in France generally, which has seen 20,000 French Jews leave for Israel in the past 4 years.

Hasidic Rabbi stabbed in Strasbourg by attacker shouting “Allahu Ackbar”

A Hasidic Rabbi was stabbed this afternoon in Strabourg, by an attacker shouting “Allahu Ackbar”.

Rabbi Chalom Levy, who is described as belonging to a Hasidic sect, was stabbed in the Jewish quarter of the city, 500 metres from the Great Synagogue.

Rabbi Mendel Samama, another Rabbi in Strasbourg, said that Rabbi Levy described his survival as a “miracle”.

“He was shocked. He is weak. He was hit in the abdominal region a few centimetres from a vital organ”, said Rabbi Samama.

The Grand Rabbi of Strasbourg, Rabbi René Gutman, has said that this is the work of one lone attacker, and is not reflective of a wider problem in the city, but has requested additional security.

Strasbourg has a Jewish community numbering around 15,000.

The attacker has reportedly been involved in a similar attack previously.

France has been described as one of the most dangerous countries to be a Jew and over half of French Jews wish to leave the country for Israel.

“We are maintaining close contact with local law enforcement and are urging them to vigorously investigate and prosecute those responsible for this alleged anti-Semitic attack.”

14-year-old detained by London Shomrim and arrested by police for attacking Jews with fireworks

Volunteers from Shomrim, the Jewish neighbourhood watch patrol, arrived almost immediately and witnessed the boy chasing one victim and hurling a lit firework towards him. The Shomrim volunteer chased and detained the boy, then called the police who arrested him.

The Metropolitan Police Service said: “A 14-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated common assault and possession of a firework in the street. He was taken to a north London police station and subsequently released on police bail to a date in early March. No one was injured during the incident.”

Just before Holocaust Memorial Day, Nazis parade “Hitler was right” banner in centre of Newcastle

A group of neo-Nazis from “National Action” paraded in the centre of Newcastle at the foot of Grey’s Monument with a “Hitler was right” banner on Saturday. Members of the group performed Nazi salutes in the centre of the square. Some local people remonstrated with them but at least one onlooker returned their Nazi salute (see photo below). When a musician in the square attempted to play saxophone music, one of the neo-Nazis violently attacked him. In addition to the assault, the use of the banner and Nazi salutes constitute offences of racially aggravated intentional harassment, alarm and distress under section 4A of the Public Order Act, as well as other possible offences.

The group previously attempted to demonstrate in Liverpool in August and September 2015, causing widespread public disorder and the cancellation of their demonstrations, with the group humiliated in August when they were unable to leave Liverpool Central train station. They then returned unannounced in November 2015 and delivered short speeches outside various public buildings and monuments in Liverpool, including speeches against Jews saying that: “Jews don’t care about me. They don’t care about you. They don’t care about any of us. All they care about is money and power.” Their video of the event contained additional antisemitic graphics and quoted from Adolf Hitler’s antisemitic diatribe, Mein Kampf. There have been no arrests.

In June 2015, “National Action” filmed themselves desecrating a menorah in Birmingham’s Cannon Hill Park by spraying graffiti and hanging a Nazi flag from it. There have been no arrests.

National Action’s blog contains 282 references to the word “Jew”, including accusations that Jews:

  • Use the blood of non-Jews in rituals
  • Usurp power through financial and political conspiracies
  • “Terrorise” the non-Jewish population through usury
  • Dilute Aryan races by operating the slave trade, then campaigning for civil rights in order to weaken Aryan races

Jonathan Sacerdoti, Director of Communication at Campaign Against Antisemitism said: “It is very clear that ‘National Action’ is an antisemitic neo-Nazi organisation which is trying to propagate fascist ideology and sees as its role models some of the most hideous figures in history. The group’s purpose is incitement to racial and religious hatred and its activities range from vandalism to violence. Unfurling a banner proclaiming ‘Hitler was right’ and performing Nazi salutes for less than ten minutes in a public square is cowardly and a deliberate effort to provoke disorder. This group is not a dying vestige of British neo-Nazism but a new, young movement and we are pleased that Northumbria Police are taking this incident so seriously. Enough is enough and this brazenly criminal group must be brought to justice. That young British people are openly idolising Adolf Hitler in Britain in the days before Holocaust Memorial Day is a reminder that for us to say ‘Never again’ with any confidence, we must be vigilant and fight antisemitic racism ruthlessly.”

A spokesman for Northumbria Police told Campaign Against Antisemitism: “Northumbria Police is carrying out enquiries into the protest that was held at Monument in Newcastle City centre at 1:55pm on Saturday, January 23. We had no prior warning that the protest was due to take place and city centre officers attended immediately after receiving information that it was happening. Upon officers’ arrival the demonstration had ended and we believe it lasted less than 10 minutes. We have received one report of assault and we are in the process of investigating this along with looking into whether any other offences may have taken place. Detectives are checking CCTV footage from the city centre area and material posted on social media and enquiries are ongoing.”

Don McLean’s Jewish wife of thirty years calls police after alleged antisemitic abuse

The Jewish wife of famed American singer Don McLean has claimed that he is antisemitic and violently abused her. Court documents show that the 70-year-old’s wife of 30 years, Patrisha McLean, has been granted a restraining order after claiming that her husband had attacked her and may have killed her had she not called the police.

Patrisha McLean’s handwritten declaration filed in Rockland District Court said: “For the first 10 years or so his rage was unfathomably deep and very scary — calling me horrible things like ‘hebe’ (I’m Jewish).” According to the statement, Don McLean controlled his rage until the incident on Monday when he allegedly lost control and threw the landline telephone to the floor when his wife tried to call the police. Patrisha McLean said she locked herself in the bathroom and called the police with her mobile, alleging: “He tried to break open the door and I feel he would have succeeded and killed me but for me telling him I was calling 911, which did deflate him,” she wrote.

Don McLean’s defence lawyer, Walter McKee, said: “Don denies making any ethnic slurs to his wife. As with many of the statements made in the request for a protection order, this statement is patently untrue.” Don McLean also commented, saying: “This last year and especially now have been hard emotional times for my wife, my children and me. What is occurring is the very painful breakdown of an almost 30-year relationship. Our hearts are broken and we must carry on. There are no winners or losers but I am not a villain. I may never recover from this but I will try and hope to continue to entertain you all as I always have. I ask God to give us the strength to find new happiness and I hope people will realise that this will all be resolved but I hope I will not be judged in this frantic media environment.”

Molotov cocktail attack on synagogue in Germany “not antisemitic”, court retrial maintains

Two of the three people who firebombed a synagogue in Wuppertal, Germany in 2014 have been retried. Two men and one youth attacked the synagogue with Molotov cocktails in July 2014, claiming they were drunk following Ramadan. The three men live in Wuppertal but are said to originate from Gaza and Judea and Samaria.

The original trial, which took place in early 2015, provoked outrage from the Jewish community due to its leniency and verdict. The judge ruled that the attack was not motivated by antisemitism but was rather an act of “protest against the war in Gaza”. He issued the attackers a fine of €800.

The retrial has resulted in the two men, now 25 and 30 years old, merely receiving suspended prison sentences of 2 years and 1 year, 11 months, respectively, meaning that neither will go to prison unless they commit further offences. The youth is awaiting retrial in February, and will stand before a young offenders court.

Once again, the judge declined to declare this an antisemitic attack.

Jewish man injured in stabbing attack at Marseille synagogue, 15-year-old suspect in custody

A Jewish man has been injured in a stabbing attack this morning in the French city of Marseille. According to Times of Israel, Binyamin Amsalem, a teacher, sustained light injuries to his hand. His life was saved by his Torah (Jewish bible) with which he shielded himself.

Reports say that the 15-year-old attacker shouted “Allahu Akhbar” and attempted to stab congregants as they left the synagogue after morning prayers, and when he was unsuccessful fled the scene, throwing his knife away. Police apprehended the attacker ten minutes later.

According to the Marseille prosecutor: “He claimed to have acted in the name of Allah and the Islamic State, repeating several times to have done this on behalf of ISIS.”

A police source told Le Figaro that the attacker appeared to be insane, but ISIS has previously told its supporters to use insanity as an excuse. In a stabbing attack on synagogue-goers in October in Marseille, the assailant claimed to be insane, but this was rejected by the court. ISIS supporters in Marseille also stabbed a Jewish teacher in November.

The incident occurred in the early hours, in the station waiting room. Palestinians routinely humiliated and put to death for selling land to Jews, according to report

An investigation by Israeli Channel 2 television has reported that it has discovered an activist who seeks out Palestinian Arabs who have sold land to Jews and arranges for them to be humiliated and executed by Palestinian police. The Palestinian Authority forbids the sale of land to Jews by law.

The investigation obtained a tape of far-left Israeli activist Ezra Nawi apparently bragging about how he reports Arabs who plan to sell land to Jews to the Palestinian Authority’s security forces, in the knowledge that they will be killed. “I hand them directly to the Palestinian security service,” Nawi says on the tape. When asked what happens once Palestinian Authority police arrests the sellers, Nawi says, “It catches them, kills them. First Zubur, then Gazanga.” According to the report, Zubur is an Arabic word used in Hebrew to describe humiliation and physical torment, and Gazanga is not a known word but implies death, in the context of the tape.

Police investigating after Jewish shoppers pelted with gas canisters by neo-Nazis in London, Shomrim assisting victims

The Metropolitan Police Service is investigating an incident that took place this evening at around 19:45 in which three Jewish shoppers were subjected to antisemitic abuse in Tottenham Hale by three white men in a white pickup truck.

The three men shouted “Hitler is on the way to you, Heil Hitler, Heil Hitler, Heil Hitler” and threw small gas refill canisters towards the victims, two men and a woman.

Shomrim, the Jewish neighbourhood watch patrol, was called by the victims and is providing victim support. None of the victims were injured, but they were badly shaken by the experience.

The Metropolitan Police Service is now investigating. Anybody with information should call the police on 101 quoting reference CAD7955-06/01/16.

Jonathan Sacerdoti, Director of Communications at the Campaign Against Antisemitism, said: “This disturbing incident is a reminder of the abuse that many Jewish people experience all too often. It is vital that victims report all antisemitic attacks or incidents whenever they happen, and that the police take every report seriously, investigating and charging those responsible wherever possible.”

Shomrim volunteer Michael Blayer said: “This behaviour is appalling, the victims were innocent shoppers at the Tottenham Hale Retail Park, and they were targeted because they were visibly Jewish. The verbal abuse was disgusting, and small objects were thrown towards the victims, making them fear for their immediate safety. Shomrim are supporting the victims. The incident has been reported to the Metropolitan Police, I have absolute confidence in our local police that this will be thoroughly investigated. I encourage anyone who witnessed this incident or who may have experienced a similar incident to report it.”

Four Berlin men abuse and throw food at “Filthy Jews”

RIAS have reported that on the morning of Saturday 28th November, four drunk men entered an underground train at Berlin’s Senefelder Platz station. Once on the train, the men began making xenophobic remarks about two people speaking English in their vicinity.

One of the two being verbally attacked questioned the men in German, asking what the problem was. “You and your Jewish friend are the problem,” came the response.

As they were exiting the train, one of the two replied, “What would be the problem if we were Jewish?” The four men responded by approaching the two, who were already at the door, in an aggressive and threatening manner.

The English-speaker suggested they all exit the train together to calmly discuss the matter. As the doors closed, one of the four replied he did not owe any “filthy Jews” an answer and threw his kebab container at them.

Berlin Football Association suspends players for antisemitic violence and death threats

The Berlin Football Association’s judicial review has found two FC Neukölln players guilty of antisemitic conduct against the Jewish team TuS Makkabi and has issued suspensions.

The review supported the decision to suspend a match that took place on 18th October 2015, when it emerged that an FC Neukölln player was threatening to commit murder by stabbing. The review noted that the player in question was likely referring to the recent wave of stabbings against Israeli Jews when he made his threats. The review also noted that the player was wearing an “I love Palestine” t-shirt at the time of the incident. He was suspended for ten matches.

A second member of FC Neukölln has been suspended for twelve games for punching a member of TuS Makkabi. He advised the review that he recognises his misconduct and apologises. The review did not consider it relevant that the same member of the Jewish team also received a headbutt from another FC Neukölln player.

The review fined FC Neukölln, issued penalty points and ordered it to cover the costs of the hearing.

This is the second time in recent months TuS Makkabi has been on the receiving end of antisemitic attacks from opposing teams. They received antisemitic verbal abuse from a player throughout their game against BFC Meteor 06 in August. The offending player had a history of racist conduct and was suspended until 2017.

ISIS supporters stab Jewish man wearing kippah in Marseille

A man wearing a kippah (Jewish skullcap) has been stabbed in Marseille by three assailants who shouted antisemitic abuse and support for ISIS. Police say the attack took place at around 20:00 local time. The victim is a 57-year-old man who was attacked outside his home near a school and synagogue complex, according to AFP.

The attackers forced their victim to look at photographs on their smartphone of Mohammed Merah, the French Islamist terrorist who went on a rampage in 2012, shooting dead three French soldiers, a Jewish teacher and three Jewish schoolchildren aged three, six and eight.

They then showed him a t-shirt with the ISIS logo and stabbed him multiple times on the arms, legs and stomach. A police patrol arrived and the attackers fled on a scooter. Their victim somehow escaped serious injury.

Last month three Jews were attacked on their way to synagogue by a man of Moroccan or Algerian descent shouting antisemitic abuse. At the time Marseille police suggested that the man was mentally disturbed but this was later refuted by one of his victims, and the court dismissed the attacker’s plea of insanity.

Holocaust survivor reports physical and verbal harassment from gang in Berlin

Recherche- und Informationsstelle Antisemitismus (RIAS), a watchdog organisation based in Germany that tracks instances of antisemitism, released details on Thursday regarding information it received earlier this year. A Holocaust survivor, based in Berlin, reports receiving antisemitic physical and verbal harassment from a group of five youths as she returned home from attending synagogue in Berlin’s Charlottenburg in April 2015.

She reports that she was travelling on the underground train system, when one of the youths said “Shabbat shalom” to her in a loud, aggressive voice. She was then pushed, shoved and stared at in a threatening manner. The group made several remarks in Arabic, which she was unable to understand. She left the train prematurely, fearing further attack.

She remarks that the atmosphere in the area surrounding her synagogue has become palpably more hostile since summer 2014.

New York taxi driver attacks passenger upon learning he’s Jewish

A Muslim taxi driver in New York City has been questioned by police after allegedly attacking a Jewish passenger.

Moshe Indig, told Arutz Sheva: “I took a cab from Manhattan to Brooklyn yesterday at 20:00. I asked the driver to make a phone call. He refused but then relented and put the call on the speaker. When he saw that I was speaking Hebrew, he said: ‘I hate the people and the language you are speaking. If I had known that you were a Jew, I would not have given you the call.’”

“When he dropped me off in Brooklyn I started walking and suddenly he got out of the vehicle and ran toward me and started punching me in the head. I was immediately concerned that he might have a knife or some other weapon, so I hit him forcefully. He grabbed my kippah and my cellphone and ran away.”

India leaned into the cab to try to retrieve his belongings but the driver started driving and Indig fell into the road and was injured.

India reflected: “I was lucky. If he had had a knife, there is no doubt that he would have killed me. His eyes were full of hatred. He turned from a cab driver to a terrorist.”

Jewish man stabbed multiple times in planned attack outside kosher pizzeria in Milan

An orthodox Jewish man has been stabbed outside a kosher pizzeria in Milan. The victim was stabbed four times, including in the face, although one account said he had been stabbed ten times. Witnesses say the attacker shouted “I will kill you” twice in Italian before knocking the victim to the ground and stabbing him. A passerby intervened and in the process the attacker’s mask slipped from his face. Some accounts said that he appeared to be of Arab descent. He then fled to a car in which two men were sitting and they sped away. The victim was rushed to hospital and is reportedly in a moderate condition.

The attack took place in the Jewish Quarter of Milan. The Milanese Jewish community numbers around 7,000 people, making it the second largest in Italy after Rome. One member of the community told Le Repubblica: “We are afraid that this is an attempt to mimic the attacks in Israel” where there has been a wave of stabbings of Jews by Palestinians.

Whilst some sources named the victims as 40-year-old Nathan Graff who was visiting his father-in-law from abroad, others, including the Jewish community of Rome, said that the man was a local resident who worked in a wine shop.

We have seen other incidents of Jews being stabbed outside Israel, most recently in Marseille and New York. In Marseille, police claimed that the attack was committed by a mentally disturbed drunk man, but this was later debunked by a court which dismissed his plea of insanity.

Sudanese man tries to murder Jewish passenger on Ethiopian Airlines flight

A Sudanese man attempted to murder an Israeli communications contractor travelling on an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Chad to Ethiopia. The victim, identified only as Arik, aged 54, told Ynet that the Sudanese man sitting behind him identified him as a Jew about 20 minutes before the plane began its descent.

“He came up behind my seat and started to choke me with a lot of force, and at first I couldn’t get my voice out and call for help. He hit me over the head with a metal tray and shouted ‘Allah akbar’ and ‘I will slaughter the Jew.’ Only after a few seconds, just before I was about to lose consciousness, did I manage to call out and a flight attendant who saw what was happening summoned her colleagues.”

According to Arik, most passengers did not come to his aid, but one of the few who did was a Lebanese passenger. Arik says that even after his attacker had been restrained, the man tried to convince the other passengers to murder him.

Arik said that he thought he was going to die: “During the moments when I thought I was going to die, I’d already begun to separate from my family in my thoughts.”

Ethiopian Airlines said in a statement: “The attacker, who has been identified as Ahmed Mohamed, showed no signs of violence as he was boarding the flight….He is still in detention and is due to appear in court on Wednesday. The Israeli passenger was taken to a medical clinic in the airport and released shortly after.”

In this instance, the victim used his radio to call Hatzalah dispatch for assistance. He was able to drag himself to an intersection leaving a trail of blood, collapsing as his Hatzalah colleagues arrived.

Police and members of Shomrim, the Jewish volunteer neighbourhood watch patrol, arrived on the scene quickly but the attacker had already escaped and is still at large.

Popular London nightclub ordered to close after antisemitic brawl, but assailants escape further action

Bouts, a popular nightclub in Kensington, London has been ordered to close for two weeks following a brawl which erupted into the street after customers were subjected to antisemitic abuse.

Video footage showed between fifteen and twenty people engaged in a fight during which one person was thrown across the bonnet of a taxi with such force that it was dented, whilst an assailant shouted “f***ing Jews”. The club has reportedly told journalists that the fight began after a customer made an antisemitic remark towards a group of Jewish people and was asked to leave.

When the club reopens, it will be required to exclude anybody younger than 21 and must close by 2am every night. Six men and a woman, all aged between 18 and 21, were arrested and issued with fixed penalty notices.

Media accounts of the incident seem to indicate that racially-aggravated offences occurred, making the use of fixed penalty notices by the police inexplicably lenient.

Jews stabbed on way to Marseille synagogue leaving a woman in a serious condition

Three Jews, including a rabbi, have been attacked on their way to synagogue in Marseille, France. A woman in her fifties was reportedly seriously injured after being stabbed twice in the stomach, although her injuries are said not to be life-threatening.

The attack took place yesterday morning at 07:30 as the rabbi and two congregants walked to their synagogue. They came under attack by a knife-wielding man who was reportedly shouting antisemitic abuse and heavily drunk. The woman was stabbed twice before one of the other congregants apparently rushed to defend her, suffering a knife wound himself.

The victims reportedly fled to another nearby synagogue where they were protected by the synagogue’s security team.

When local police arrived, the attacker, described as being of Moroccan or Algerian descent, continued to shout antisemitic abuse at the officers. The attacker was reportedly already known to the police as he is said to have a history of mental illness and violence.

The French National Bureau for Vigilance Against Antisemitism (BNVCA) has voiced concern that the antisemitic stabbing of Jews in Israel may encourage similar attacks against Jews outside Israel. The BNVCA repeated its warning in the wake of the attack.

Holocaust survivors brutally beaten during sickening antisemitic robbery

Samuel and Diana Blog, an elderly couple who survived the Holocaust were badly beaten during an antisemitic burglary at their home in Amsterdam. Two men, described as middle-aged and of Moroccan descent, entered their home posing as policemen. They shouted: “Dirty Jews, from now on your property is ours.” They brutally beat the elderly couple, tied them up and drugged Diana. Diana’s father was a diamond cutter who had left her a collection of jewellery. The thieves took all of it at gunpoint, threatening to cut off Diana’s fingers when she struggled to remove her rings. The men told Diana: “You dirty Jews. You shouldn’t wear it. You’ve worn it for too long already, now it’s ours.” After they had robbed the couple, the thieves continued to beat them.

Diana, who survived the Auschwitz concentration camp said it was worse than the beatings she received from the Nazis. The couple had been living independently before the attack, but now Diana says she endures crippling pain, and Samuel was blinded. “Those bastards have destroyed our lives,” Samuel said. “I have severe pain. I’m completely broken inside,” Diana added. They will now spend the remainder of their lives wheelchair-bound in hospital.

Their son, Emanuel, is sure that his parents were targeted due to their religion because their home has a large mezuzah on the door, and the attackers continued to beat his parents even after they had stolen everything. He has offered a €12,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
