Yesterday I was on the Tube [in London] and the guy opposite me was wearing a swastika pin. He caught me looking and took it off, handed it to me and snarled “you wanna take a better look? ”. I’m just an ordinary middle-aged Londoner.
I work in an office. I go to football. I like eating out. I enjoy the arts. I am a proud family man. I give up time for charity work. I try to be a decent contributing member of society. I pay my taxes honestly. But there appears to be something that sets me and my kind apart.

At park gates in East London a friend of mine gets told to f**k off for photographing a flag. At a pub in Bath my wife gets called scum when she mentions her background. In a student hall in Manchester a friend’s son is asked to leave as the specially prepared food he chose to eat is not permitted because it carries a label written in a language used by a country that is “banned” by the student union.

In Belfast a historic blue plaque is removed to deny part of my history. In theatres in Edinburgh and London I am told to denounce my opinions or lose the right to perform. A sportsman in Ireland tweets if he sees my kind he’ll punch us in the face and recommends others follow suit.

Protesters across the country show no shame in shouting that my historical persecutors were right and social media is rife with vitriol towards me (even from so-called friends). And in Bradford I’m told that I am not even permitted to enter the city.

What is this? Racism. Where is this? Britain and Ireland. When is this? Now. Who am I? I am a Jew.

Never again, we say, never again.

I have found this image on an Italian Facebook page where people can publish their artwork. I have notified Facebook, but they answered that it doesn’t violate their terms of service. The title is, as you can see, “the new flag of Israel” and it has a swastika on it, with a Magen David in it. Arbitrio libero means free will. I can’t see how this image isn’t anti-Semitic.

On August 13, 2014 I found two pieces of paper pinned at a rain gutter in the Weserstraße in Berlin-Neukölln. It was written on it:

The layout of the papers is obviously a reference to the Stolpersteine (german for “stumbling stones”) which remember the people who were persecuted and killed by the Nazis from 1933 to 1945, mainly Jews.

The message of this papers is: the Israelis (or optionally “the Jews”) are the “new Nazis”, because the dead in Gaza are identified with the victims of the Nazis.

During recent discussions on Facebook, I have been called a ‘tribal b*****d’, told that ‘the problem with you Jews is that you believe you are the chosen people and you should learn to act like everyone else’, and ‘the Jews in Israel should all go back to where they came from’.

These comments came not from members of far-Right organisations but from friends of friends: supposedly educated, rational people who pride themselves on being politically correct and claim to fight against ‘injustice’.

They have left me reeling: shocked, angry, sad and afraid. I have found myself doubting several friends, questioning their attitudes and beliefs, wondering if they are secretly judging me for being a Jew.

Last week, one of my oldest friends was walking with her young daughter in a north London suburb when she was approached by four Asian youths.

Guessing that she was Jewish — they saw her leave a bagel bakery and, like me, she has a mop of dark, curly hair — they began to make Hitler salutes at her.

When she crossed the road to get away, they followed her up the street, shouting the Nazi salute ‘Sieg Heil’ and mimicking the sound of hissing gas canisters, like those used in concentration camps. She was, not surprisingly, petrified.

The second incident was after I boarded the plane, I was standing with two of my colleagues. We were introducing ourselves. One of the guys said he was from Germany. Immediately another crew member said “ good, my father is Palestinian, so that means we both hate the f’ing Jews” my German colleague was horrified and informed him that he absolutely did not share his views. At this point I informed them that I was Jewish and asked if he felt that way about me? He replied that if he could he would drop a bomb on every one of us.

I spoke to my manager who said that on our return to London she would put in an official complaint about him. However, during the course of the next few days i received so many intimidating comments from the rest of my colleagues, like if you report him he could lose his job and pension and he has a family to support, and I was made to feel like the bad one, and didn’t report him (i regret that)

One day on a flight from London to Tel Aviv this is what happened. An orthodox Jewish man was speaking to one of the crew members because his family was missing one kosher meal. The crew member looked at his passenger list and told him that it definitely had not been ordered. The passenger insisted that it had. The crew member’s response was “ you may have been on Schindler’s list, but you’re not on mine”. I immediately wrote a report, with no response and I urged the passenger to do the same. He refused.

What a great a turn-out today! It’s amazing that so many people from all walks of life united in solidarity with the Gazan people. However I was disturbed by the use of the Nazi swastika (equated with the star of David) and the term holocaust on placards (suggesting a holocaust is acceptable when carried out by the “right” people), and am sure it would also alienate members of the public.

When I was a kid I was riding my bicycle in Ottawa . I was wearing my yarmulke which I only wore occasionally at that time.

I rode by a group of teens and one of them stuck his hand out and knocked my yarmulke off as they all cursed and laughed at me.

As we exited, they made a hissing sound, what I believe was imitating the gas chambers, and as they marched away included the chant ‘hey yid, go home’.
