Jewish couple in Belgium afraid to leave house after antisemitic harassment and death threats

A Jewish woman named Nicole, 43, and her husband, have been left afraid to leave their house after persistent antisemitic harassment.

Nicole and her husband have lived in Marchienne-au-Pont for two and a half years, the last two months of which has seen them ensure antisemitic harassment, including death threats, damage to their home, verbal abuse and physical aggression.

Recently a Star of David was painted onto their door. The couple also appears to have been sent large amounts of hate mail.

“A few people have discovered that we are Jews. Since then we have been threatened with death” she said. Their treatment highlights the increasingly hostile environment that many Jews are subjected to across mainland Europe.

Switzerland: Jewish family chased by knife-wielding man shouting antisemitic abuse

An Orthodox family in Zurich, Switzerland, have been left shaken after a man chased them with a knife whilst shouting antisemitic abuse at them.

The attack place in Zurich’s 3rd district on Saturday evening. The man started towards the family with the knife and followed them after they fled.

According to the father, the man had approached him in a playground and became aggressive. He look his family home, only to emerge to the man waiting for them with a knife.

A neighbour was able to subdue the attacker until the police arrived. However, the attacker was released after only a day.

Astonishingly, the police have claimed that the “man did not pose a real danger to them, since he was too far away” despite the fact that he had followed them to their home.

The police also said that there is “no clear motive behind the incident, as he is neither a Nazi, nor an Islamist”.

10 arrested in Berlin after alleged antisemitic beating of Syrian Jew outside nightclub

A group of Syrians and Germans have been arrested in Berlin after an alleged attack on a Syrian Jew outside of a nightclub.

The 25-year-old victim asked one of the group for a cigarette. However, one of the assailants noticed his Magen David necklace and started verbally abusing him. The verbal abuse quickly escalated and the group allegedly beat the Jewish man.

The victim ran away but lost his footing and was punched and kicked on the ground by the group. Passers by thankfully intervened in the attack and the police were alerted.

The group were detained and subsequently released pending further investigations.

After yet another violent antisemitic attack on the streets of Germany’s capital, the city’s Jews will be worrying yet again about their long-term future, as antisemitism in politics with the rise of AfD, in the fringes of the Palestine movement and on the streets seems to be spiralling out of control.

“Flurry” of antisemitic incidents in South Africa cause concern among communal leaders

The South African Jewish Board of Deputies has expressed its concern after a “flurry” of antisemitic incidents in the past days.

In one incident, a group of passengers waiting for their luggage from an El Al flight were called “wicked Jews” by a passer by who said “You people are wicked. Jews are wicked people, very wicked people”.

A mural with the German flag centred around a Swastika also appeared in Johannesburg.

SAJBD Chairman Shaun Zagnoev has also commented on a series of particularly virulent instances of online antisemitic abuse, saying: “The posts show how easily radical anti-Israel sentiment can spill over into hateful slurs and threats against Jewish people in general. We are being told that we are ‘scum’, ‘rats’, ‘bastards’, ‘pigs’, ‘swine’ and ‘fat-nosed f***ks. We are further being warned that “our time is coming” and that “the Holocaust will be a picnic after we are done with you””.

Zagnoev believes that the incidents are linked to a flare-up of tensions in South Africa surrounding Israel, after popular DJ Black Coffee was attacked by BDS for performing in Israel, leading supermodel Shashi Naidoo  to retaliate against BDS by branding Gaza a “sh*thole”, for which she received death threats before apologising.

Antisemitic incidents in Ukraine double in a year, nationalists claim it is a Russian plot

According to research from the World Jewish Congress, antisemitic incidents in Ukraine doubled over the course of the last year.

The WJC said that it recorded at least 130 antisemitic incidents in the country in the last year, twice what was recorded in the preceding 12 month period. The incidents range from vandalism to far-right marches and verbal abuse to physical violence. The country is home to around 350,000 Jews.

Some domestic forces in Ukraine have dismissed the report, even suggesting it is a Kremlin plot to portray all Ukrainians as fascists. Across Ukraine, there has reportedly been a backlash against the report, particularly from nationalists, who are a growing political force in the country. Unfortunately, unless people are able to swallow their pride and acknowledge that antisemitism is a growing problem, there will be little chance of defeating it. Ukraine, which does not have clearly-defined hate crime legislation, often sees racially and religiously motivated incidents investigated as mere hooliganism.

Everyday Antisemitism has recently covered several incidents in Ukraine, including an attempted arson attack on a Synagogue, a General calling to “destroy” Jews, a “national hero” peddling antisemitic conspiracy theories and saying she doesn’t like “k*kes”, as well as a swastika being carved into the chest of a Jewish activist – falling just within the catchment period of the report, a fact demonstrating that those detracting from the claims in the report by indicating that there have been no violent incidents are clearly incorrect.

This sadly fits a general trend, which has seen antisemitic crime rising across Europe and beyond.

The majority of the incidents are never reported in the English language or outside Ukraine.

UCLA quarterback and NFL prospect reveals routine antisemitic abuse from stands

Josh Rosen, a Jewish quarterback playing for UCLA who has been tipped as a future NFL prospect, has spoken out about the routine antisemitic abuse he is subjected to from fans.

“I get a lot of Jewish things”, he said, “my nose, particularly. I get, like, ‘Stay the f*** down, you Jewish bastard … I’m gonna break your f***in’ nose, you Jew'”.

He also noted a sign which said “Josh Rosen’s Bar Mitzvah wasn’t even lit”.

Rosen has however said that he isn’t bothered by the abuse, commenting “it gets my competitive juices flowing”.

Rosen’s religious beliefs have been the centre of speculation, and though he describes himself as “kind of an atheist”, some have speculated that he will choose to go to a club in New York if possible due to the substantial Jewish community there.

Orthodox Jew beaten in the street in Brooklyn mere days after similar incident

The Anti-Defamation League are offering a $5000 reward after another Orthodox Jewish man was beaten on the streets of Brooklyn.

Menachem Moskowitz, a 52-year-old Orthodox man, was attacked at around 12:30pm on Shabbat when he was leaving his Synagogue in Brooklyn. Two attackers approached the man, punched him in the face and then began to choke him. The man was saved by two onlookers who came to his aid and helped him to escape.

According to the victim, he “greeted him hello. Next thing I know he said ‘I don’t like Jews. Who were you talking to?’He put me in a headlock and I’m trying to maneuver out of him. In the meantime, I’m screaming ‘Help! Help! Help! Help!’ He says, ‘You don’t need help. I’m going to kill you right here'”.

The attacker allegedly called the victim a “fake Jew”, presumably in reference to the antisemitic “Khazar” conspiracy theory that claims that Ashkenazi Jews are not descended from the Ancient Israelites despite the overwhelming evidence. There are historic inter-communal tensions between religious Jews and African Americans in the Brooklyn area, which unfortunately appear to be resurfacing.

The victim was left with a black eye, a broken rib and various scratches and bruises. Thankfully there was a nurse on the scene to assist him.

Last week a Hasidic man was attacked in Crown Heights, in what is believed to be an antisemitic attack.

Trend continues of German Jewish students being bullied out of state schools

Yet another Jewish student at a Berlin school has been left traumatised after antisemitic bullying.

A primary school student at the Paul-Simmel-Grundschule was told by a classmate that she should be beaten and killed after she revealed the fact that she is Jewish, her father said.

“Our daughter was accosted by Muslim students because she does not believe in Allah” he said, before describing how she was surrounded by a group of Muslim students who chanted “Jew” at her.

These incidents reportedly form a pattern of antisemitic bullying which has seen her threatened on several previous occasions.

Josef Schuster, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, said “if Jewish students can no longer go to school without fear of antisemitic abuse, there’s something wrong in this country”.

Last July we reported that teachers in Germany are increasingly concerned about antisemitism from Muslim students creating a hostile environment in schools. We also reported on several disturbing incidents of antisemitism, including a Jewish boy who was forced out of his school following 4 months of persistent antisemitic bullying. The antisemitism in German state schools has led to an explosion in applications to specialist Jewish schools, which provide a safe haven from the bullying, at least within school hours.

Writing in July, we warned that “unless the German government takes serious steps to ensuring that schools are tackling antisemitism, and giving assurances to teachers and parents that all complaints of antisemitism are taken seriously, regardless of the source, then the situation will be dire for Jewish students in the country”, emphasising that “action must be taken quickly before confidence is lost in the school system’s ability to protect Jewish students”. Whilst no such action has been forthcoming, finally German politicians seem to be ready to act on the national disgrace of widespread antisemitic bullying in schools. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, who is currently on a state visit to Israel, condemned this latest incident, writing “when a child is threatened by antisemitism, it is both a shame and unbearable. We must stand against every form of antisemitism”.

The German Police Union has now demanded that it be provided with information on these incidents. Rainer Wendt, the Union’s head, has voiced concerns that the incidents are not being properly recorded, indicating a problem of a scale beyond what we have been able to report.

Only time will tell whether any meaningful action will be taken.

500 far right extremists march in Berlin and are addressed by mainstream German politicians

A far-right contingent of 500 extremists have marched in Berlin under the slogan “No to the Great Coalition”. The march was organised by a group called “We are for Germany”, who have frequently held marches in which racist activity has occurred.

Attendees at the march shouted “National Socialism Now” and “Glory and Honour to the German Nation”, quite explicitly the language of Nazism. As well as those from explicitly far-right movements, the march was also attended by members of Alternative for Germany (AfD), a right wing populist party that is increasingly showing itself up as a far right movement. AfD is in the ascendancy in German politics, and polling places them either 2nd or 3rd in the country.

Alexander Kurth, a neo-Nazi from Saxony, spoke alongside  Utta Nürnberger and Roland Ulbrich, both members of AfD.

Multiple attendees allegedly performed Nazi salutes and shouted “Heil Hitler”. Explicit displays of Nazi imagery and expressions of support for Nazism are a criminal offence in Germany. Other attendees displayed antisemitic cartoons, including one with an antisemitic caricature of a Jew which said “goyim know”, an antisemitic internet meme that originated on the far right. The meme is used to imply that there is a Jewish conspiracy that Jews are attempting to cover up.

There was also widespread harassment and abuse of journalists at the march.

Footage of the march can be viewed here.

The victim has said he was surrounded by a group of youths who beat him, including hitting him with a tree branch, breaking his glasses, before stealing his Kippah and running off. They reportedly shouted antisemitic insults as they carried out the attack.

Four youths have been detained by the police, who have confirmed that they believe the attack to be antisemitic in nature.

Resurgent far right led to 4 antisemitic crimes per day in Germany in 2017

Police recorded 1453 antisemitic crimes in Germany in 2017, a figure amounting to around 4 each day.

According to the police the vast majority of these crimes came from members of the far right, a fact that is unsurprising. Despite the fact that Jews face antisemitism from the far left and Islamists as well as the far right, Germany is experiencing a troubling resurgence of the far right, a group that is unrepentant and militant in its hatred of Jews, with far right individuals often centring their world view around antisemitism.

The crimes include 32 acts of violence, 160 cases of property damage and 898 cases of antisemitic incitement.

In 1377 cases, 95% of the crimes, the police determined that the far right was responsible.

Despite commentary from abroad often suggesting that immigration is directly responsible for antisemitism in Germany, only 33% of offenders were foreign-born and only 25 cases were “religiously motivated”, amongst which Islamist crimes are included.

The author of the report believes that the majority of antisemitic crimes go unreported, which paints a deeply disturbing picture of the extent of antisemitism in contemporary Germany.

Group shouting “gas the Jews” destroys sign at Jewish centre, but Kentucky community comes together to stand against Antisemitism

University of Kentucky students and locals have come together to stand against antisemitism after an antisemitic incident at the campus Jewish centre.

A sign at the campus Chabad centre was destroyed by antisemitic thugs. Rabbi Shlomo Litvin of the Chabad of the Bluegrass said that he heard a group outside shouting “Heil Hitler” and “gas the Jews” before they destroyed the sign.

Rabbi Litvin has said that he has been overwhelmed by the level of support from the community after the incident.

The University of Kentucky held a unity prayer service last night at which Rabbi Litvin, his father Rabbi Avrohom Litvin and Lexington Mayor Jim Gray all spoke. Dozens of people, Jewish and non-Jewish, attended the event.

Rabbi Avrohom Litvin said during his sermon “the biblical command to love your fellow as yourself means look beyond those things that can divide us or seem to be different – race and gender and religion and background and all those differences – and look to the core. And at a core level, each and every one of us are children of God”.

The Mayor declared Thursday “Chabad of Bluegrass Day” in recognition of the centre’s work in the community.

The police have assigned a detective to the case. Rabbi Litvin described the police’s support as “excellent”.

The University of Kentucky have also promised to take action, saying “we can never — and will never — condone the use of vile, hateful speech targeted at anyone on our campus or in our community, regardless of their identity or perspective”, whereas the campus Muslim student body have voiced their support for the Jewish community.

Rabbi Litvin vowed that the centre will “keep on doing what we’re doing…if anything, this only strengthens our resolve and the need for us to be here, with our message of tolerance, of love and of what Judaism is”

Antisemitic rant outside Israeli restaurant in Berlin goes viral: “you can all go to the gas chamber”

A 60-year-old man has been caught on camera making antisemitic comments in a shocking rant outside an Israeli restaurant in Berlin. The man is currently under investigation for inciting hate and resisting arrest.

The video quickly went viral, accumulating over 600,000 views on the day it was posted. The six-minute video depicts the man accosting Mr Yorai Feinberg, the owner of the Israeli restaurant.

Sadly, Mr Feinburg is no stranger to hate speech, revealing in an interview to German news that he receives about two pieces of hate mail per month – a shockingly high figure, and yet a statistic by no means atypical according to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which shows an alarming number of individuals hold antisemitic views in Germany.

“This guy saw my menorah in the window and suddenly started shouting,” Mr Feinburg told the Spiegel online.

The video shows the man initially trying to wave the camera away, but goes on to tell Mr Feinberg that Jews do not belong in Israel or Germany, stating, “nobody wants you people.” He went on to say “Everything’s about money with you… you will have to pay up in five or ten years. And your whole family, your whole clan here”, an antisemitic allegation relating to Jews and business, a view that the ADL shows some 33% of the German population shares.

The man goes on to say, “What did you all want here after 1945? After 6 million of you were killed. What do you still want here?”, Mr Feinberg who had been trying calmly to neutralize the situation, is then shown to wave down a passing police car. In response to this the man says, “no one will protect you…you can all go to the gas chamber. Either go back (to where you came from) or off to the bloody gas chamber. No one wants you.” It is unclear from the video whether the man was under the influence of alcohol or any other substance at the time.

The head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Josef Schuster, made it clear to the Juedische Allgemeine newspaper that this incident is a clear reflection of a growing trend: “this disgusting attack brings home the point that anti-Semitism has reached the mainstream of society, where it is expressed openly and bluntly.” He went on to state that many Jews now worry about whether it is indeed safe for them to live in Germany.

Jewish school’s Holocaust play interrupted by shouts of “Heil Hitler” from audience

Children from the King David Victory Park School, Johannesburg, South Africa, had their performance of a play about the Holocaust interrupt by chants of “Heil Hitler” from students from another school.

Middle School students from the School were performing a one act version of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, a story about a Jewish boy who died in a concentration camp, at a festival at Waterstone College.

One student told a local news source that “they were chanting ‘Heil Hitler, Heil Hitler.’ I was shocked and disgusted. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing”.

Not only did they interrupt the performance to shout this, but reportedly they did so as the scene depicting the child being led to the gas chamber was occurring. They also chanted “Bruno Bruno”, the name of the son of the concentration camp commandant.

The students apparently shouted other antisemitic abuse at the Jewish students as they packed up early to leave the festival. The main culprits are thought to be from Edenvale High School. King David School’s head of drama Renos Spanoudes has also claimed that a member of staff from Edenvale has played down the seriousness of the incident, but apparently some students from the school have expressed their shock at their peers’ behaviour.

Wendy Kahn, from the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, says that her organisation is seeking an audience with Edenvale to discuss the incident, commenting:

“From time to time antisemitic incidents of this nature occur during interschool events, both in the cultural and sporting arenas…We have in the past been involved in addressing these incidents. We do not believe that this is an indication of an upsurge in antisemitism”

Canada: 12-year-old pupil at elite school victim of a “serious” antisemitic incident

Upper Canada College, a Canadian private school which has educated several prominent Canadian politicians and has been described as having an “illustrious history”, has had to reassure parents after a “serious” antisemitic incident took place, which has led to the police being involved.

Whilst the information available is quite sparse, a 12-year-old Jewish student apparently had antisemitic slurs and symbols. Whilst the school has emphasised that the incident was a “serious” one, it is not known if this represents one incident in a pattern of antisemitic bullying or is a one off, or whether there were other elements to the incident.

The school called a meeting with all the students in the lower years and communicated to them just how serious an antisemitic incident of any nature is.

The school issued a letter to parents saying:

“I write to inform you of a serious incident that occurred yesterday at the Prep…a student in Grade 7 returned to his locker at the end of the day to find it vandalized with antisemitic symbols and messaging. As soon as we became aware of the situation the College began an investigation.”

“We have attempted to progress the investigation swiftly, involving all the appropriate parties, including the police”

Whilst the police were involved, they have since said that despite the incident being serious, it should not be a criminal matter. Several Jewish groups have offered their support to the school in providing education relating to Jewish issues. The school’s response appears to have been an excellent one, in swiftly involving the police, communicating with parents, and having a frank, serious, but open discussion with pupils in an attempt to reassert their shared values.

Bologna is home to a small, historic Jewish community. It is fortunate that this man was apprehended by police officers who were capable of detaining him before he was able to carry out any direct attacks on Jewish residents of the city.

Church leader screams “let them Nazis get on you again” at Jewish shopkeeper in Seattle street

Footage has emerged of a Church leader in Seattle, Washington, berating a Jewish shopkeeper.

Omari Tahir-Garrett, who has served 21 months in prison for knocking out the Mayor in  a fight, repeatedly tells a Jewish store owner called Ian Eisenberg. to “go back to Germany” and tells him that he should “let them Nazis get on you again”.

Shockingly, this antisemite is apparently running for a position on the City council. On his website, he rather ironically speaks of fostering peace in the community.

The horrible rant can be viewed here.

Apparently the row started because Garrett is unhappy that Eisenberg’s shop opened next to his Church. However, there is an alcohol store that is also in the immediate vicinity.

Jewish gym owner called a “f*cking c*cksucking f*cking Jew” for having served in the IDF

Avi Yemini, a former IDF soldier, (Israeli Defense Force), who owns the popular gym, IDF Training, in Melbourne, Australia, received a phone call, on March 14, from an anonymous caller, who threatened to “shoot him in the f**kin’ head'”, and demanded that Yemini get out of Australia, calling him a “f*cking c*cksucking f*cking Jew”.

The phone call was actually answered by a receptionist at the gym’s off-site reception. The Caulfield Police Station, Melbourne, who are currently investigating the incident, declined to speak to the press.

According to the Daily Mail Australia, Yemini said that the operator who spoke to the abusive caller was “very good under the circumstances. It was pretty vile and full on.”

The caller, who, at first, was polite, asked the operator if Yemini was “the ex-IDF bloke”. The operator replied:

“Yeah, 100 per cent.”

“So he knows how to shoot Palestinians,” the caller replied.

Maintaining his calm, the operator remarked: “I’m not too sure to be honest with you.”

The caller responded by delivering an anti-Semitic rant: “He’s a f**kin’ c**ksucker Zionist. Why are you even working there, mate?”

The called went on to say “You tell Avi to get the f**k out of the country, the f**kin’ c**ksucking f**kin’ Jew”

Yemini, who is publicly pro-Israel, told the press that when it comes to the identity of the caller, he has no clue.

Yemini reported the abuse to the police, but he did he not reveal how he traced the call.

Yemeni, who runs his gym with his wife’s assistance, told the press that “we’ve had threats and antisemitic things said to us in the past, but this is [the] worst ever.”

He told Daily Mail Australia that his employees were “on high alert for any potential threats”. Yemini also said that he was being unusually cautious, not only about his own safety, but about the safety of his family: “We are taking it seriously as a real threat, and trying to shut it down before it escalates,” he said.

Being an experienced IDF veteran, has helped Yemini draw patrons to his gym, which has been in operation since 2009. He teaches both Krav Maga, an IDF martial art, along with fitness classes.

Yemini is known for being both a successful businessman, and an outspoken critic of Islamism. He told the Daily Mail Australia: “I am outspoken and criticize aspects of Islam…which is often met with threats, but it won’t stop me”.

Born in Australia to a Chabad family, Yemini is no stranger to bigotry. In a Times of Israel blog post that was posted last June, he wrote: “It was almost normal to hear racial abuse thrown at me when I walked down the street, usually by a passing car, often referencing Hitler, or in some cases, even copping an egg being thrown at me. It was accepted. It was part of being Jewish.”

And it was his devotion to his religious heritage that motivated Yemini to volunteer for the IDF.  Australia, like many countries, allows their citizens to fight in foreign wars, as long as the country is an actual ally.

Although today Yemini is no longer a practicing Orthodox Jew, he is still Jewish: “I am a proud Jew.”  However, Yemini now only wears a yarmulke in synagogue or when he is talking to the media: “I’m making a statement”.

And Yemini is dedicated to sharing his personal statement with other Australian Jews. He told The Times of Israel:”My pride in my heritage and my people does not stop there [identifying as Jewish]. I have made it my business to promote it.

According to The Times of Israel, Yemini not only opened his gym for financial reasons, but also because he wanted “to show Australian Jews that being a proud Jew, being a proud Zionist can work for you. It can and should be a part of your business plan. It was and is [a part of] ours.”

Understanding all too well the many challenges that come with being openly Jewish, Yemini says that he is willing to debate issues with everyone, including Muslims. However, Yemini says that attacking people over race and religion is “unacceptable”: “When you’re talking about shooting someone in the face, you’re crossing a line whether you meant it or not”.

Since Yemini’s case is an on-going investigation, the outcome is unknown. But it is important to acknowledge countries, like Australia, who actively investigate threats against Jews.  Unfortunately, what Avi Yemini experienced has become an all too familiar story.

The global rise of anti-Semitism has turned too many Jews into victims, and, even more tragically, into murder victims. Therefore, it is imperative that Jewish leaders continue to press for a vigorous response from both the police and the courts, in order to successfully attack “the longest hatred”.

Germany: Jewish boy forced out of school after 4 months of antisemitic bullying, violent attacks

A British-Jewish family in Berlin has been forced to pull their 14-year-old son out of his school after he was subjected to months of antisemitic bullying.

The boy was sent to Friedenauer Gemeinschaftsschule, a school they were attracted to initially because of its diverse pupils, many of whom are from an Arab or Turkish background. However, when the son mentioned he was Jewish, one pupil said to him “Listen, you are a cool dude but I can’t be friends with you, Jews are all murderers”.

The mother said that verbal abuse quickly escalated into physical violence, and this month “he was attacked and almost strangled, and the guy pulled a toy gun on him that looked like a real gun. And the whole crowd of kids laughed. He was completely shaken”.

The mother had approached the Headteacher of the school, asking whether he could bring in an organisation to educate the children about antisemitism, as well as other forms of xenophobia and racism, but despite him appearing open to the idea, no action was taken. The mother’s parents are Holocaust survivors who have spoken at the school.

There have been indications for over a decade that antisemitism was driving Jewish students out of state schools and to Jewish schools, with Deidre Berger suggesting in 2015 that more and more Jewish students were attending Jewish schools for fear of antisemitism and in 2006, Der Spiegel running a report on Jewish schoolchildren who had been pushed out of secular schools by antisemitism.

According to the JC, the Moses Mendelssohn Jewish High School in Berlin receives 6 to 10 applications each year from Jewish students who have similarly been forced out of other schools by antisemitism, indicating a huge problem in the city’s schools. Aaron Eckstaedt, the school’s headteacher, says that parents are often concerned with the lack of formal response from those schools, and that the complaints are often centred around students of an Arab or Turkish background.

It is not known whether these incidents are being investigated by the police.

Westboro Baptist Church’s sickening antisemitic protest outside Yeshiva University

The extremist Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, which is widely known for its extreme homophobia, and in particular for staging “God Hates Fags” protests at the funerals of US soldiers, has staged an antisemitic protest outside Yeshiva University in New York. Yeshiva University is a Private University that is aligned with Modern Orthodox Judaism.

Half a dozen protesters held signs that had messages including “The Jews Killed Jesus”, “God hates Christ-Rejecting Apostate Jews”, “144k Jews Will Repent” and “Believe On Lord Jesus”.

The claim that Jews killed Jesus is one of the oldest antisemitic quips, and it is one that has been used to incite violence against Jews throughout the history of Christian Europe. Describing religious Jews as inherently sinners because they are not Christians is extremely belittling, denies Jews their distinctness, traditional religious practices and beliefs, and can only be regarded as antisemitic. This is further illustrated by the protesters singing “he will call his people home, the rest of you Jews will die with hearts of stone” – saying that “you Jews” will die if they do not become Christians is so blatantly antisemitic a statement that it scarcely needs elaborating upon.

The protesters also sang “wrath will soon pour on you, for your harmful sins, your great affliction, it will soon begin” to the tune of Hatikva, the Israeli national anthem. They also sang that Jews should repent for “killing Jesus” to the tune of hava nagila.

25 Yeshiva University students, alumni and friends held a counter-protests, holding signs with positive messages, including those embracing Israel’s inclusivity towards the LGBT community.

The “Church” is considered a hate group by the ADL and the SPLC. They have made several antisemitic comments in the past. Their founder has belittled the Holocaust and accused contemporary Jews of orchestrating a “Holocaust” against their Church, saying “The First Holocaust was a Jewish Holocaust against Christians. The latest Holocaust is by Topeka Jews against Westboro Baptist Church”, and “they whine about the Nazi Holocaust, while they perpetrate the Topeka Holocaust”.

They also believe that the Holocaust is a punishment for Jews not “accepting” Jesus.

At a time in which relations between Christians and Jews are generally quite positive, it is extremely disheartening to be reminded that such blatant Christian antisemitism still exists. It also serves to remind us that a hatred that most prominently directs itself at one minority group will always end up spilling over onto others. In this sense, it is heart warming to see Modern Orthodox Yeshiva University students defiantly holding signs supportive of LGBT people in the face of such hatred.

“Here’s a Jew, let’s burn her” shouted at schoolgirl as antisemitism erupts in California school

Carlmont High School in Belmont, California, finds itself in the midst of an antisemitism epidemic, following several reports of antisemitic incidents.

There were reports of students openly chanting “kill the Jews” in the school’s stadium, which apparently happened earlier in March, but which has only just come to our attention. This in itself is obviously extremely shocking, being a brazen display of incitement to violence which goes beyond mere playground bullying in its scale and severity.

There were also reports of antisemitic graffiti, including the words “toasted Jew” being written on school property.

As a result of the escalating incidents, the school’s Principal Ralph Crame met with around 20 parents and students to discuss the situation. When one mother was walking to the meeting with her daughter, it is alleged that a group of students shouted “here’s a jew, let’s burn her” at the girl. This seems to point to the possibility that these students heard about the meeting and decided to turn up to further abuse Jewish students. This betrays a deep, underlying antisemitic attitude in parts of the student body.

The school has said that further incidents would be considered under the “harassment, bullying, or hate crimes and will be dealt with accordingly under District policies and the Education Code”, but initial reports suggest that the police have been unwilling to see the events as hate incidents.

Sweden: antisemitic abuse shouted at Jews from car in Malmo

A group of Jews were harassed in Malmo last Thursday.

A car drove slowly past them while the passengers shouted antisemitic abuse at the group of Jews and their Haredi attire.

Malmo police say they’re investigating the incident as a hate crime.

They are also investigating a Swastika which was carved on the door of a Jewish man in the city.

The situation in Malmo is increasingly bad for Jews, with the authorities seemingly unwilling to take serious action to prevent further attacks against Jews in the City.

Jewish man harassed while driving in Melbourne

A Jewish man has reportedly been harassed while driving in a suburb of Melbourne.

The CFCA reported that the man was pursued by a very aggressive driver.

They then stopped alongside each other at some traffic lights. The man in the other car unleashed a torrent of antisemitic abuse, shouting about the “fucking Jews” and bringing up the “occupied territories”.

According to the definition of antisemitism, “holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel” is antisemitic. Beyond this, whilst some people may feel a bubble of security when in their own cars, harassing someone who is driving is still extremely dangerous.

Further details are not yet known.

Jewish man has his finger sawn off by antisemitic attackers in brutal attack on two brothers in Paris

The National Bureau for Vigilance Against Antisemitism in France has released a report which claims that two Jewish men were briefly abducted, beaten and one had his finger sawn off in Paris. The Bureau’s report is based on several police reports.

The alleged attack occurred in Bondy, a suburb in Paris.  The two men, who are brothers, and who are the sons of a local Jewish leader were forced off the road by the assailant whilst driving. They are both visibly Jewish as they wear kippot.

The assailants shouted various antisemitic slurs at them, which included “Dirty Jews, you’re going to die!”

The two brothers were forced out of their car and several men of “Middle Eastern appearance” emerged from a “hookah café”.

The men proceeded to severely beat the two brothers. One attacker then allegedly sawed off one of the Jewish men’s fingers.

Both brothers were hospitalised and were reportedly in a state of shock after the attack.

This story comes against a backdrop of increasing antisemitism in France. Last year we reported that a 13-year-old Jewish boy has his kippah turn off and was beaten by attackers shouting “dirty Jew” in Paris. In December, another Jew was beaten by attackers also shouting “dirty Jew”, also in Paris. In Strasbourg last year, an Orthodox Jew was beaten by attackers shouting “dirty Jew, we will kill you”, and in a separate incident a Chabad Rabbi in the city was stabbed by an assailant shouting “Allahu Ackbar”, with the attacker having previously committed a similar crime. There have also been high profile terrorist attacks against Jews in France, including the 2012 massacre at a Jewish school and a shooter killing 4 shoppers and injuring nine at a Kosher supermarket. Though Jewish communities are heavily guarded in France, and indeed elsewhere, nobody can have their safety guaranteed at all times, and several incidents have called into question the provision of security, not least the assignment of a police officer who has links to multiple antisemites to the protection of a Jewish communal leader.

The situation in France is fast becoming intolerable. It is impossible for a minority community to flourish under constant threat of serious physical harm, which is evidenced by the sheer number of French Jews fleeing the country, with many making Aliyah whilst others find refuge in London.  Over half of French Jews have expressed a desire to move to Israel and the country has been described as one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a Jew.

Jewish man slashed repeatedly with knife and beaten by neo-Nazis in Chile

The Chilean Jewish community, alongside with the Integration Movement and Liberation for Homosexuals (Movilh), have condemned an attack committed against a Jewish member of the Sexual Diversity Group.  He was reported to have suffered a range of physical and verbal attacks, for the sole reason of wearing a shirt depicting the flag of Israel.  The victim (Jorge Arce), has issued a statement following the ordeal, describing how his aggressors followed him: shouting profanities and anti-Semitic slurs, which subsequently descended into applications of physical violence, beginning with stone throwing and followed by beatings and slashing’s.

According to the victim, the assailants were wearing items identifying themselves to Neo-Nazism, thus affirming that the motivation for the attack was wholly antisemitic in origin, and clearly indicates that it wasn’t merely related to Zionism, but to the clear link to Jews and Judaism which the attackers would have inferred from the flag. However, even if the attack was merely motivated by his t-shirt, according to the International Definition of Antisemitism, “holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel” is antisemitic.

Whilst subjecting the victim to fist punches to the chest, the victim’s arms and legs were exposed and subsequently slashed with a knife, from which he suffered multiple cuts. Jorge Arce remarks that there were “40 marks” on his arms, several of which shall scar permanently; a poignant and harsh reminder of the wholly repugnant behaviour he was subject to, for the sole reason of being a Jew.

Movilh condemned the attack, stating the events “deserve total legal and social sanction” and adding that they will fully back any actions the Jewish community sees fit to take. In response to the event, the Jewish community of Chile have stated “we cannot allow more victims of hate in our country.” The incident has made clear the absolute necessity that attacks carried out on the basis of belief or personal identity are condemned, investigated and punished. Unfortunately, the shocking ordeal inflicted upon Jorge Arce offer a harrowing message to the world that the fight against antisemitism is far from won.

Protesters in Kiev chant “Jews out” to celebrate birthday of Nazi collaborator

Ukrainian far right Nationalists marched in Kiev on New Years Day to celebrate the birthday of Stepan Bandera, a Nazi collaborator.

As we noted in December 2015 in a report on support for Bandera coming from a Mayor in Ukraine, the Nationalist figure has been gaining popularity.

Bandera led Ukrainian troops who fought alongside the Nazis.

Marchers were filmed chanting “Jews out” in German. Whilst Bandera was admired by some for standing up to Communism and for aspiring to an independent Ukraine after the world, the use of German chants explicitly linking their support of Bandera to his association with the Nazis, and not just as a poorly chosen figurehead for Ukrainian Nationalism, the supporters are clearly throwing their lot in with the Nazis and the slaughter of Europe’s Jews during the Holocaust.

According to Oleksandr Feldman, President of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee and a Ukrainian lawmaker, the Svoboda party who appear to be responsible for the march have often engaged in antisemitic rhetoric.

He also added “I still can’t get over hearing it at the rally in honor of Stepan Bandera’s birthday. I admit, I’m choking up with tears. I love Ukraine, love the Ukrainians”.

France: Jewish man beaten by attackers shouting “dirty Jew”

A 30 year-old Jewish man, who was walking home from work, was beaten by a group of men on a street in Creteil, France, a suburb south of Paris.

Despite the fact that one of the attackers called the victim an antisemitic slur, a “dirty Jew”, the police have not classified the incident as an antisemitic attack, the local judiciary police have opened up an investigation and are currently trying to determine if the crime was motivated by antisemitism.

The crime occurred in the courthouse neighbourhood, an area that Jewish businesses helped develop. Petty criminals are known to frequent the area.

Haaretz reported that when the police showed the victim 120 photographs of local criminals, he was able to recognize one of his attackers. The Haaretz article also revealed that “police believe the same local thug attacked a non-Jewish man on the same day.”

Albert Elharrar, the leader of the Creteil Jewish community, told the press that “the local thugs” assaulted the victim, a father, who was “returning home from work”. The perpetrators “hit” [the victim] “from behind” and “threw him on the ground and beat him”.

Elharrar told Le Parisien that “the victim was brave enough to hit one of his aggressors back, which allowed him to try to escape, but they caught him.”

Creteil, which is the home to approximately 22,000 Jews, is one of France’s largest Jewish communities  As reported in Haaretz, Elharrar believes that, despite this attack, Creteil is a “safe” city for Jews. “This is a place where different communities live side by side”.

However, in the past three years, there has beenan antisemitic robbery and a rape, which motivated several Jewish families from Creteil to move to Israel. But Elharrar thinks that “it’s not because of Creteil itself, but [because of] the feeling of insecurity in France altogether”.

According to French Jewish leaders, antisemitism stills threatens the safety of Jews. In 2015, there were 808 assaults on Jews, a record high, which caused many French Jews to leave the country. But despite a 61% reduction of hate crimes against Jews in France in 2016, the Jewish community remains vigilant.

Therefore, it is of great concern that the Jewish man, who was attacked in Creteil, was called a “dirty Jew”. As Elharrar pointed out in the Haaretz article:”he wasn’t wearing any distinctive sign”, like a Jewish skull cap, that would have “identified him as Jewish”.

Unfortunately, there is not enough evidence, at this point in time, to determine if the attackers marked the victim as a Jew because they saw him  enter a synagogue, or a kosher supermarket. However, the fact that there was no obvious way to identify the man as Jewish opens up the disturbing possibility that the attackers could have been searching for victims in the Jewish community. The police must conclude their investigation before it is known if the attacker intentionally tracked the victim, in order to commit an antisemitic crime.

Neo-Nazi asks for directions to Hillel at Northwestern University, shouts “Sieg Heil” at Jewish lecturer

A Jewish lecturer at Northwestern University, in Evanston, Illinois, has been targeted with antisemitic abuse as he walked near to campus.

The lecturer, who teaches Jewish Studies, was walking at around 5:30pm when a black SUV pulled up to him. A man leaned out of the passenger seat and asked where the Hillel building was. The lecturer pointed to it. The man then asked if he was Jewish. When the lecturer said he was, the man performed a Nazi salute and shouted “Sieg Heil”.

It is extremely worrying that these individuals were trying to locate the Hillel building, and such a request for information being immediately followed by a Nazi salute could easily be construed as an act of intimidation against Jews in the area.

The University has increased patrols around the area for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately CCTV footage is too dark to identify the man or the vehicle, but the police seem to be investigating.

Munich: Jewish restaurantier faces persistent harassment from BDS

Due to the rise of antisemitism in Munich, Florian Gleibs, the Jewish owner of the Schmock Israeli restaurant, is closing his restaurant in the Bavarian capital after 16 years of operation.

Gleibs, who is 45, told the German national daily newspaper, Die Welt, that when his restaurant became a magnet for anti-Israel tirades, he hung up a large sign in Schmock’s window that said: “We are not involved in politics.”

But, despite Gleibs efforts, the personal attacks against Gleibs and his restaurant continued. In an article in the Jewish Chronicle, Gleibs stated: “I always have to get into discussions and I don’t want to do it anymore.” Gleibs said that he even received a letter where he was accused of being a “corrupt thief who hawks goods produced by terrorists on stolen land, with stolen water, and fertilized with Palestinian blood”. Such claims amount to nothing short of blood libel.

Marcus Schaefert, who is the spokesman for the Bavarian domestic intelligence agency, told Die Welt, that “anti-Zionist antisemitism pretends to criticize Israel, but, in fact, rejects Israel’s existence”.

And this anti-Israel hate, which is being driven by the German BDS campaign, has been directed at Gleibs. “People from the educated, well-off middle class have decided to hold me responsible as a representative of Israel, according to the motto: What you people are doing is no different than what we Germans did back then [in the Holocaust],” Gleibs told Die Welt.

Charlotte Knobloch, the leader of the Munich Jewish community, and a Holocaust survivor, explained to the Jerusalem Post, “The BDS campaign disguises the socially unacceptable. It has modernized the Nazi slogan, ‘Don’t buy from Jews!’ by demanding, ‘Don’t buy from the Jewish state'”.

Gleibs, who is actually an Iraqi Jew, told Die Welt that he “sees antisemitism as more emotional now than before the [2014 war].” He revealed to the Die Welt reporter that he has experienced firsthand “people on the streets screaming ‘Jew, Jew, cowardly swine come here and fight alone.'”

But German antisemitism will not force Gleibs out of the restaurant business. His popular restaurant, Meschugge, will offer patrons dishes from his now closed Schmock restaurant. However it won’t be closed for long. Schmock is being turned into an eatery that serves up cuisine from the country of Laos. Gleibs told the Jewish Chronicle that his new Laotian restaurant “will run perfectly” because the public doesn’t care about Laotian history’s darkest days. “Nobody will care about that because no Jews [were] involved.”

Trump supporter shouts “Jew-S-A”, other antisemitic abuse at journalists

The Trump campaign has condemned a supporter who shouted antisemitic abuse at journalists.

The supporter, who was wearing a “Hillary for Prison” t-shirt, shouted “Jew-S-A” at journalists at a Trump rally in Phoenix, Arizona, on Sunday.

He went on to shout “we know who you are. You’re the enemy. You’re going down”.

Such statements clearly echo antisemitic conspiracy theories. The slogan “Jew-S-A” unequivocally shows a belief that Jews control the American government, and targeting journalists similarly betrays such a belief about the media. The words are also, of course, extremely sinister and threatening, and unfortunately demonstrate the sort of antisemitism that the Trump campaign has emboldened. Identifying Jewish people as “the enemy” is a sad representation of the resurgence of right wing antisemitism following the rise of the “Alt Right”.

Hope Hicks, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, condemned the behaviour, saying “it is not acceptable at our rallies or elsewhere”.

The State Police attended the scene, saying: “he victim explained that the two suspects shouted ethnic slurs and vulgarity at him and his family while they were waiting to leave the airport. The victim was able to avoid a physical confrontation despite the provocation and gathered photos of the suspects as well as their license plate when they fled the area”

The police were able to arrest the men, who attempted to flee. They are being held and are facing charges.

CORRECTION: the following incident has not just happened, but in fact occurred in August 2016. We have decided to keep the article up as it was not as widely publicised as an incident this severe should have been.

A Swedish mother of four has allegedly been attacked by a Muslim gang for wearing a Star of David necklace.

TLV Faces, a Jewish news outlet, has reported that Anna Sjogren was attacked while walking through a neighbourhood with a high Muslim population.

Sjoren told the WZO Centre for Countering Antisemitism:

“A Muslim girl saw that I was wearing the Star of David on my neck and she started swearing at me and spat in my face. I got very upset and pushed her off”

“There were at least ten witnesses to the attack. All ten of them were wearing hijabs or scarfs in the colors of the PLO.  Some surrounding witnesses claim that I ‘tripped’ and fell and that no one hurt me. It’s just unbelievable.”

“Before we got to the hospital, one of the attackers gave me threatened me saying, ‘shut up or we’ll kill you.’”

She was apparently hit with a sharp object by another girl in the crowd. When she arrived at hospital she had been beaten so badly she could not talk or see.

Sjoren was initially afraid to go to the police, saying “I cannot go to the police. The worst thing is that they will get my name and address. They’ll know where to find me and know and know I am the Jew who reported it.”

Writing on her Facebook page, Sjoren said “The Star of David is extremely meaningful and significant. I will never take it down no matter what happens. When other Facebook users show support I will stand up proudly for Israel, I will never let any one silence me. Am Yisrael Chai. We will never forget and never forgive”.

Sjoren is due to speak to the Security Organisation of the Jewish Community on Monday.

New York girl forced out of high school by antisemitic abuse

A Father in New York has described how his daughter was forced out of her school by antisemitic abuse, stemming from political disagreements.

Marco Greenberg says that his daughter faced abuse after saying that “Religion in the extreme can cause violence and war. Just look at radical Islam”.

One student allegedly replied to this statement by saying “I’m going to rearrange your face”.

However, many comments focused on the girl’s Jewish identity, with her receiving comments like You white privileged Jewish bitch”, “Zionism is racism”, and “we’re not your Arab slaves”.

Greenberg said that the school failed to take his daughter’s complaints seriously, claiming that the principal simply “admonished our daughter for being ‘very opinionated’ and refused to take any concrete action…meaning free ad hominem attacks or threats of physical assault”.

The situation escalated even when the girl tried to contextualise her remarks by pointing out that radical Islam targets peaceful Muslims more than non-Muslims. Eventually, she was forced to move school following the harassment.

Argentina: students attend club dressed as Nazis, abuse and attack Jews

Reports have circulated that several high school students in Argentina attended a club with Hitler mustaches and swastikas painted on them and wearing leathers. They attend a school in Lanus, a neighborhood of Buenos Aires.

The club was also host to several Jewish students from an ORT High School.

A mother of one of the Jewish boys spoke to Rádio Latina saying:

“at a certain point in the night, young people came wearing swastikas and had painted-on Hitler mustaches…my son and his friends complained and asked that they be taken out, but all the club management did was demand that the mustaches be washed off and that the swastikas be removed”

“They all ended up fighting, and everyone was kicked out of the club – not just the aggressors”

According to the Telegraph, the students who were dressed as Nazis also shouted “f*cking Jews” and “proudly” showed off their Nazi imagery when they realised there were Jewish students present.

Families of the Jewish students have condemned the club, saying that no students bearing Nazi imagery should have been allowed in in the first place.

Ariel Cohen Sabban, head of the Delegaiton of Argentine Jewish Associations, said that he would be happy to meet with the club’s manager, and commented:

“It’s neither a joke nor a grace. These symbols reflect an ideology which culminated in the assassination of six million Jews at the hands of the Nazis. If these kids are older than 16, then these kids could be sentenced to between a month to three years in prison for their actions, as this is a crime in Argentina. We have to be alert because we are beginning new hot beds of anti-Semitism…the state’s drive to combat this phenomenon, specifically through education, is very important”.

The event occurred in the resort of San Carlos de Bariloche, which is in the Andes. The town was a hiding place to several Nazis after the conclusion of World War Two, including Erich Priebke, and several conspiracy theories hold that Hitler and Eva Braun survived and secretly fled their after the war.

French Jews pushed out of public schools by Antisemitism

Haaretz has reported that French Jews are being pushed out of the French schooling system by a culture of prevalent antisemtism.

One Jewish parent said that, despite having been educated in a French public school some years prior, the situation is now so bad that “anti-Semitic bullying means it would be too damaging for any Jewish kid you put there”.

Thirty years ago the majority of French Jews sent their children to public schools. The figure is now at only one third. In Paris, which has the largest population of Jews in France, almost all the children attend either private schools or Jewish schools.

French Jews have cited a “bad atmosphere of harassment, insults and assaults” for the change, as well as the growth of Jewish education that has gone along with increasing religious observance.

Whilst the incidents are usually ‘only’ instances of general bullying, some have involved serious intimidation, physical violence and death threats. Other incidents have included spraying a Jewish student with deodorant to ‘simulate’ a gas chamber, and a Jewish student being corned by classmates and being threatened with stabbing.

These incidents go alongside a steep increase in antisemitism in France generally, which has seen 20,000 French Jews leave for Israel in the past 4 years.

Edinburgh Shalom festival attendees met with Nazi salutes from Palestinian protestors

Attendees at the Shalom Festival, which took part over the course of the Edinburgh Festival, were met with taunts and Nazi salutes, the Jewish Chronicle has reported.

The festival was a full day celebration of Israel, which featured Jewish, Arab and other performers and, as the name suggests, was staged in the spirit of peace and co-operation. It attracted around 800 visitors.

A crowd of 150 protesters stood outside the event, shouting things such as “racist scum” and “shame on you”.

According to the JC, most of the crowd were members of Scottish Palestine Solidarity campaign. They also shouted “your tickets are covered in Palestinian blood” and “boycott and isolate Israel”. The definition of antisemitism states that it is antisemitic to  use “the symbols and images associated with classic antisemitism (e.g., claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel) to characterize Israel or Israelis”. Describing the tickets to a peace event, which features Jewish and Arab performers, as “covered in Palestinian blood” borders on blood libel, as it twists even actions taken in the spirit of peace and co-operation as evidence of Jewish, or in this case Israeli, brutality

Apparently at one point the protesters crossed the line into unambiguous antisemitism, taunting the visitors with Nazi salutes.

According to Nigel Goodrich, one of the event’s organisers, many mothers complained that their children had been called racist.

Attendee Susie Kelpie said that such a response was commonplace: “it’s vile, intimidating and quite normal for any Israeli-flavoured event in this city.”

Antisemitic abuse on Passau University campus, Germany

RIAS Nationwide Incident report: from Passau, Lower Bavaria, (south eastern Germany), 8th June 2016.

Two students were subject to antisemitic verbal abuse on Passau University campus.

On 8th June, at approximately 6pm, the two students were verbally abused by three men calling them “Dirty Jews”. Neither of the students was wearing any obvious ‘Jewish’ or ‘Israeli’ symbols, but the three men said that their targets looked like “typical Jews”.

The three men sat, with bare torsos, on a bench and were most likely inebriated. The reporter noted the three men singing an antisemitic song.

From their various and visible tattoos, it could be deduced that the men were associated with the extreme Right.

The antisemitic remarks were widely heard, but there was no immediate reaction from the other campus residents.

With thanks to RIAS – Recherche- und Informationsstelle Antisemitismus. The Foundation for Research and Information (office) on Antisemitism.

Writer comment: Unfortunately, many people can be subject to unwanted approaches and remarks from drunken people on a night out or at other times in our daily lives. Even good-humoured interactions can feel intimidating. We are most often able to shrug it off, move along and forget about it. Indeed, it is often safer not to react, especially if you feel threatened.

However, targeted, habitual and dogged insults during one’s daily life, (in this case two students wandering on their campus), can eventually chip away at a person’s confidence and lead to them feeling unsafe. This is especially so, if you are in a space which is familiar to you, a place of work, a place which is essentially your home.

Jewish businessman called “Jew boy” by neighbour, told to leave the country

A retired 71-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to religiously or racially aggravated harassment after subjecting her Jewish neighbour to a campaign of abuse.

Susan Dean subjected her neighbour Allan Rich to antisemitic abuse which stemmed from a dispute over their adjoining beach huts. The huts come with the seafront properties, but Mrs Dean was initially upset as she felt that Mr Rich and his friends “encroached” and prevented her from enjoying her hut.

Mr Rich is the chairman of the management committee for the block of luxury flats, and was the CEO of a successful company.

Mrs Dean left Mr Rich an anonymous note in which she called him “Jew boy”, a common term of antisemitic abuse.

Three days later, she told Mr Rich in another note that he should leave the country.

She also said that she could not attend a communal barbecue as she “was not Jewish”, which appears to be her suggesting that Jews make non-Jews feel unwelcome and are only concerned with other Jews, a common antisemitic canard.

Mr Rich and his wife were apparently so upset by the antisemitic abuse that they were reduced to tears and were fearful of using their own balcony as Mrs Dean may have been using hers.

The prosecutor said “These aren’t off the cuff handwritten notes, they are typed up notes that were then placed in strategic places and they clearly caused the aggrieved a lot of distress”.

In his appeal to a magistrate asking for a restraining order, Mr Rich stated:

“[Susan Dean’s] religious hate is causing me and my family great sadness.”

“I have never had to deal with such a horrible situation in my whole life. I can no longer go out on my balcony because she will shout abuse and we can no longer walk around the side of our flat because if she is there she will shout at us, so we have to walk our dog on a different route.”

“When we received the first note my wife and I could not sleep that night. We were both led to tears.

I’m not sure why anyone would want to do it or how they could be so vile. I’m not even sure how she knew my religion.

I do not want to be abused at my own home, my wife doesn’t feel safe coming down with other family members and I do not feel safe for my wife to be their alone.

This caused us to cut our stay in Sandbanks short, but she has also been sending abusive letters to our other address.

I’m worried she may react one day and do something out of the ordinary, that she could be stood at my door with a knife, because I do not know how much she hates me and my religion or how far she may go to satisfy her hate”.

Mrs Dean was fined and was given a restraining order, prohibiting her from having any contact with Mr Dean or his family.

Trump supporters tell Jewish writer “it’s the ovens for you” and that she’d “get a gold star”

Laura Silverman, a Jewish author, freelance editor and publishing consultant, was recently subjected to antisemitic abuse online after making a negative tweet about Donald Trump.

Silverman was sent an image of Pepe the Frog, an internet meme often favoured by the far right, standing in front of Auschwitz and captioned “You get a gold star!”

Having reported the image, Silverman was subjected to further antisemitic abuse. Several told her to “nap in an oven” and she was sent an image of the Auschwitz gates photoshopped to read “not an argument” – an attempt to imply that Silverman had used the Holocaust to silence opposition, despite the fact that she had been actively victimized by far-right trolls.

Silverman said that the images she was sent “terrified” her. She was sent pictures of emaciated Auschwitz inmates and human remains captioned “Straight outta Auschwitz”. She received an email from someone using the pseudonym “Anuddah Shoah” that read “They know about you!”: You Zionist K*ke. Do you really think you can stop Mr. Trump? You Israeli supremacists have no chance”.

She also said that as she commented on the Republican National Convention someone told her “It’s time for you to flee for Israel. If you wait too long it’s the ovens for you”.

These are particularly nasty examples of the memory of the Holocaust being routinely used to threaten, intimidate and belittle Jewish people who dare to express an opinion in public.

Leaked report into Oxford University Labour Club antisemitism seems designed to be unremarkable

The Labour Party’s inquiry into allegations of antisemitism in the Oxford University Labour Club has today been leaked. Carried out by Baroness Jan Royall, the report was commissioned after Alex Chalmers, Co-Chair of the club, resigned in February 2016 stating rampant levels of antisemitism as his reason for doing so. The incident brought antisemitism in the Labour Party into the public spotlight, and Campaign Against Antisemitism met Baroness Royall to assist her inquiry.

The full version of Baroness Royall’s report was originally kept secret, with only the executive summary being published in May. It was then expected to be published in full alongside the wider-ranging Chakrabarti Inquiry report into antisemitism in the Labour Party last month, but instead Baroness Royall was brought into the Chakrabarti Inquiry as a Co-Vice Chair, perhaps as a means of keeping her quiet. Baroness Royall’s report remained unpublished and the report issued by the Chakrabarti Inquiry was a total whitewash. The JC has now published a leaked copy of Baroness Royall’s full report.

Baroness Royall finds “no evidence that the Club is itself institutionally antisemitic” but notes a “cultural problem in which behaviour and language that would once have been intolerable is now tolerated. Some Jewish members do not feel comfortable attending the meetings, let alone participating.”

Looking at the wider issue of antisemitism, she also explains that “a pervading discourse now is that Jews are neither weak, nor poor, neither workers, nor have-nots. In short, Jews cannot be victims and cannot be discriminated against.” She goes on to say that “being anti-Zionist…is often used deliberately as a tool of antisemitism”.

Baroness Royall further notes “an environment in which Jews cannot debate, or feel safe to do so, unless their every remark is prefaced by a criticism of the Israeli government”. While she explains that a clear definition of what is antisemitic “can provide useful tools for helping consider what may, or may not, constitute antisemitic discourse” and urges the Chakrabarti Inquiry “to consider this carefully”, the Chakrabarti enquiry conspicuously avoided defining antisemitism.

The full text of Baroness Royall’s report does not change Campaign Against Antisemitism’s opinion following the publication of the partial report. The full report tells us nothing new, except that Baroness Royall thinks that Alex Chalmers was wrong when he resigned as Co-Chair of Oxford University Labour Club over rampant institutional antisemitism.

The leaking of Baroness Royall’s report has revealed that it too fails to identify individuals who are guilty of antisemitism within the Labour Party. It now seems that this reluctance to name those responsible may be a reflection of Labour’s inner conflicts.

The Young Labour conference at Scarborough followed shortly after Young Labour’s own suppressed investigation. It became clear at that Scarborough conference that some of the individuals alleged to be guilty of antisemitism at Oxford are the same young politicians with important roles in Momentum, the movement that help engineer the election of Jeremy Corbyn.

The fact that they are under suspicion lends greater urgency to the task of providing transparency on this issue, which the Labour party refuses to do.

Yet again, it seems that the needs for political expediency outranks the desire of the Labour Party’s leadership to confront the antisemitism in its ranks.

Fans Of Catholic Basketball Team Shout ‘You Killed Jesus’

On March 11th a high school basketball division title game between the all-boys Catholic Memorial School and the public Newton North High School became marred by antisemitic abuse

The Washington Post reported that the incident took place in Boston, where an estimated 100 young men sitting in the student section supporting Catholic Memorial jeered, “You killed Jesus, you killed Jesus”. Newton North High School has a large Jewish community of students. One spectator, whose parents are survivors of World War II concentration camps said, “I can’t believe it,” “I just can’t believe it.”

Peter F. Folan, president of Catholic Memorial, released a statement the next day:

“Catholic Memorial School is deeply disturbed by the behavior of a group of student spectators who made an unacceptable chant Friday night while playing Newton North High School.

CM faculty and staff acted immediately to stop the behavior. Administrators from both schools and representatives from the MIAA discussed the incident. At the conclusion of the game, CM students were reprimanded and each student personally apologized to the Principal of Newton North High School and shook his hand before leaving the arena.

We have been the subject of hurtful chants as well and we will work diligently within our own community and with other schools to end this abhorrent behavior. Catholic Memorial School believes deeply that intolerance, of any kind, is unacceptable. We apologize for the actions of our students and we will continue to strenuously address this issue within our community.”

Robert Trestan, the Anti-Defamation League’s New England regional director, said “We are very concerned why some fans thought this chant was appropriate for a high school basketball game… Hate speech has no place in the stands of any sporting event. We are grateful for the quick intervention by school officials and hope they use this as a teachable moment.”

This incident has shocked many and especially the choice of the Memorial School fans to causally revert to repeating the charge that the Jews committed deicide, which was used for centuries as an excuse to persecute Jews.

Rock star condemned for Nazi salute and “white power” remark

A former singer with rock group Pantera has been condemned by fellow musicians after giving a Nazi salute and shouting “white power”.

Philip Anselmo was filmed by a fan at an event on 22nd January held in tribute to Pantera’s late guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott. Anselmo initially claimed he had been making a joke about the white wine served to performers at the event, who included Dave Grohl and members of Metallica, and said he would not apologise.

Among those to criticise him were the band All Shall Perish, who stated: “Seeing Phil’s actions and his cowardly justification is not only disgusting and inexcusable but antithetical to the punk, metal, underground ethos to which we subscribe.”

Anselmo has been reported as making racist remarks in the past. Speaking on MTV in 1994 he refused to condemn fans shouting “white power” at Pantera gigs, and the following year he described rap artists as “pissing all over white culture”. Pantera disbanded in 2003, since when he has performed with various other groups.

In February, Anselmo changed his position regarding the tribute night and issued a lengthy apology on Housecore Records’ YouTube channel, saying that he was “so sorry”, “a thousand percent apologetic” and deserved criticism for his “uncalled-for” behaviour.

Italian football fans in London tell reporter to go to concentration camp

David Guetta, a well known reporter for a private radio station in Florence, Italy, was at the receiving end of antisemitic chanting after Fiorentina won against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart lane in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The antisemitic chants came from visiting fans, which Guetta said were “20 young Italians with a Tuscan accent” who were chanting “David Guetta, there is a train to Mauthausen waiting for you.” It is believed that around 120,000 Jewish people were killed at a concentration camp in Mauthausen during World War II.

The reporter said “I would like to have this meeting in front of the plaque in Via Farini which serves as a reminder for the Florentines who departed on those trains, on which they now want me to go on, and didn’t return”.

Jewish students threatened, told to remove skullcaps at New York Dunkin’ Donuts

Two Orthodox Jewish students from Yeshiva University were verbally abused and threatened inside a Dunkin’ Donuts store in Washington Heights, New York, on Monday.

The two identifiably Jewish students were approached by a man inside the shop and told, “Your religion is a lie” many times. The man continued to make anti-Jewish statements as the students ignored him.

The man then pointed to the students’ Jewish skullcaps, stating, “You need to take that thing off of your head.” He also threatened to “beat the s***” out of them, and asked the students to leave.

After the man left the shop, the students followed him and took clear photos of him and his license plate.

Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez told JP Updates: “Our community has zero tolerance for hate crimes and any threats made against another person due to their background, beliefs or identity must be taken extremely seriously. I am encouraged that the NYPD Hate Crimes Unit has already opened a case into this incident because no one in Northern Manhattan, nor New York City should ever feel unsafe. I will support their efforts to bring the perpetrator to justice however I can. We are so lucky to have a community as diverse as Washington Heights and this diversity should never come under threat.”

Police are investigating.

Arsenal fans caught on camera singing antisemitic songs

Arsenal fans have disgraced themselves by singing an antisemitic song on their way to a match against rival team Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. As they rode the London Underground to the stadium, a group of Arsenal supporters can be heard loudly singing “I’ve got a foreskin, haven’t you? F***ing Jew!”

The witness who filmed the incident told the Daily Mail: “I got off at Seven Sisters [Station] and spoke to the police about it but they didn’t really do anything about it. The video I shot isn’t the half of it – they were singing about the Holocaust and Aushwitz – I’ve heard that kind of thing before but it doesn’t normally happen with Arsenal. There weren’t really any other Spurs fans on the train, but there were normal commuters. No one seemed shock, some people were actually laughing. I was really offended by it.”

British Transport Police told Campaign Against Antisemitism: “We have been made aware of a video on social media showing antisemitic behaviour on board a Tube train BTP takes these matters very seriously. The matter is currently being investigated and enquiries are ongoing. Antisemitic social media posts celebrate adoption of boycott motion in Quebec

Last week the Student Society of McGill University in Montreal Québec voted to boycott Israel. Within an hour of the vote, antisemitic posts and messages appeared on social media.

800 members of the university’s 30,000 students took part in the SSMU vote to support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel.

Simon Paranski, a student at the university stated, “Within an hour of the BDS vote passing, there were posts on social media about Zionist Jew-boys and insulting people of the Jewish faith,” said Paranski.

“People reached out to us that they were personally harassed, verbally harassed on the street after the votes. Some people were on the phone with their parents that they were upset, and people hurled insults at them. It was really scary because it happened so quickly, and it was such a huge escalation.”

Vice president of the Centre for Israel and Jewish affairs, Luciano Del Negro, said they have been in touch with some students, “It is not a resolution on campus which changes absolutely anything and what we feared has come to pass. How is it that Jewish students have been insulted, disparaged, have been made to feel unsafe on campus,” he said.

On Thursday McGill University issued a statement “It is important for a university community to be built on mutually respectful dialogue. Students can report abuse or violations of their student rights to their faculty’s disciplinary officer. All complaints are taken seriously and investigated. We have not received any complaints related to this matter so far.”

Derbyshire drunk convicted for racist and antisemitic abuse

A drunk man hurled racist and antisemitic insults in the street in Derby after last year’s Paris terrorist attacks, a court heard.

Suicide bombers and gunmen killed 130 people during the attacks in the French capital on 13th November 2015.

Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court heard how David Gregory, 46, of Gerard Street, Derby, had been angered by the news and went out drinking the following day.

He was walking down Etwall Road in Derby at about 16:30 on 14th November 2015 when he saw a man jogging towards him. Gregory launched a string of obscene, racist insults at the man, who ran away and called police.

Lynne Bickley, prosecuting, said: “He thought the things he was saying weren’t nice things to hear and the last salute he had in his hand was in the shape of a fist. Police saw him standing on the pavement swaying, believed to be drunk. He said the female police officers looked young enough to be his daughters.”

Mrs Bickley said he then made numerous antisemitic comments and other remarks about people with dark skin.

After Gregory’s arrest for racially aggravated aggressive behaviour, he continued to make offensive remarks in the back of the police car, officers said.

Jaz Soodi, in mitigation, said Gregory had apologised for his outbursts and was embarrassed by his actions, which he could not remember. “He basically told the police what he told me – he couldn’t believe he had done it,” Mr Soodi said. “He was angry about what had happened in Paris. His partner had phoned police and said he was annoyed by it.”

Gregory was handed a 12-month community order with 150 hours of unpaid work and a ten-day rehabilitation requirement, and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

Speaker at London’s Speakers’ Corner denounces passing “Dirty Jews”

A speaker at Speakers’ Corner in London’s Hyde Park has been caught on video ferociously and brazenly denouncing Jews.

Claiming to be against all religion, on the two occasions caught on video, the speaker issued a non-stop tirade against Jews, shouting at any identifiably-Jewish person who passed.

To one orthodox Jewish man he said: “You’re a very f***ing dirty Jew. Don’t take it personally, take it to hell,” continuing to passersby, “His cock has been brutalised by a rabbi paedophile who cut his foreskin off. That’s how f***ed up the Jews are.”

He told another orthodox Jewish male who was passing: “Look at the Nazi Jew and see him for what he is…Your time is coming as it did in my father’s country, Deutschland…Why do you think our ancestors kicked you out of Deutschland? You learn nothing, you smug, fat Jew. Smug, fat, bearded Jew! Scum!”

The speaker referred to Jews as “Twelve tribes of head-banging schizophrenics praying to a wailing wall.” He also repeatedly claimed that Jews were Nazis as well as being their victims, for example: “They started Nazi Germany, and they got it back, Adolf Hitler style.”

As Joseph Cohen recorded him, the speaker shouted: “The day the Jew becomes a human being will be the day the Jew becomes free of the s*** of Judaism! Simple. Record it and tell your f***ing rabbi to stop molesting boys.”

No police action appears to have been taken and we are helping one victim to make a criminal complaint.

Most disturbing was that the video showed not a single member of the public remonstrating with the speaker. On the contrary, one man approached him and shook him by the hand, and a woman was recorded defending the speaker, saying: “What the Jews are doing to Gaza, to the Arabs, I think it’s a nightmare…This does not mean I don’t have friends that are Jews.”

A spokesman for Campaign Against Antisemitism said: “Contrary to common perception, Speakers’ Corner is covered by no special laws and incitement to racial and religious hatred by a bigot standing on a ladder at Speakers’ Corner is just as illegal as it would be anywhere else. Speakers’ Corner is famous for freedom of speech, but that threatening and illegal hate speech is not permitted anywhere in our country. While we are for freedom of speech we do not believe that anyone has the absolute right to abuse freedom of speech to threaten and intimidate minorities. The law agrees with us. We are keen to identify the speaker in the video. If you can help, please contact [email protected].”

Manager fails to tackle Holocaust-relativising antisemitism in Berlin, Germany

RIAS have reported an antisemitic incident that occurred at a workplace in Berlin-Mitte, Germany at the end of last year.

The victim was subjected to repeated claims by a colleague that Israel’s conduct in Gaza was equivalent to the Holocaust. When the person objected, the colleague in question began question the person’s “Jewish background”. When it emerged there was none, the colleague changed tack, accusing the affected person of being an “Islamophobe” and “anti-Islamic”.

Their manager requested that “political discussions” not be held in the workplace and granted the victim’s request to work in a different office. Under the EUMC working definition of antisemitism, “drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis” is explicitly antisemitic. As RIAS point out in their report, the manager failed to recognise antisemitism and respond accordingly.

Ex-BNP thug pleads guilty to directing antisemitic abuse at MP

A former BNP regional organiser has pleaded guilty to making an antisemitic verbal attack against his MP, Labour’s Shadow Communities Secretary, Jon Trickett.

Darren Mark Lumb, who has previous links to the English Defence League and National Front, was accused of accosting the MP for Hemsworth in West Yorkshire in the street on 23rd January 2015 and launching into an antisemitic rant.

During the trial last Thursday at Leeds Crown Court, Lumb, who is 47 and lives in South Elmsall, changed his plea to guilty to one count of religiously aggravated harassment and stalking with fear of violence, and one count of breaching an Antisocial Behaviour Order.

He was bailed on the condition that he did not approach the MP or his staff, and will return to court on 3rd March for sentencing.

A friend of Trickett’s said the MP had been left shocked and shaken by the incident and that “he hasn’t experienced rage like it in his life”.

Lumb has previous convictions for assault and disorder, and in 2011 was found guilty of using racially aggravated threatening or insulting words and behaviour after he reportedly called a petrol station worker “a black bastard”.

He stood as a BNP candidate for South Elmsall and South Kirkby in the Wakefield Metropolitan district council election in 2011.
Mr Trickett, who has been MP for Hemsworth since 1996, was former Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s parliamentary private secretary for two years and was then promoted to the shadow cabinet by Ed Miliband. He was one of 36 MPs to nominate Jeremy Corbyn in the Labour leadership election.

UK journalist forces antisemite to disembark from train for claiming “ISIS was created by the Jews”

British journalist James Bloodworth has posted on Facebook that he forced a man to disembark from a train after he made antisemitic comments. Bloodworth said that he had an altercation with the man after he refused to remove his bags from Bloodworth’s seat at the start of the journey. After he had eventually agreed to remove the bags, Bloodworth took his seat and settled down to read is book, ISIS: Inside the Army of Terror. His fellow passenger asked what Bloodworth was reading, to which he replied that it is a book about ISIS. The man replied: “You mean the Israeli intelligence services.” Bloodworth said he ignored the comment until the man pressed: “You do know that ISIS was created by the Jews? Who is the book by?” When Bloodworth told him that the book was by Michael Weiss and Hassan Hassan, the man allegedly responded “Weiss is a Jewish name.” Bloodworth says he then asked the man to stop talking to him, but the man insisted, claiming that “No Jews died in the Holocaust. It’s a hoax. The gas chambers and all that. You’re just uninformed.” Bloodworth said he kept repeating the point and when he used the word “Sheeple,” Bloodworth lost his temper, telling the man that he would forcibly eject him at the next stop. According to Bloodworth’s account, he allowed the man to gather his belongings before marching him to the door, saying: “You’re getting off this f***ing train” to a small round of applause from fellow passengers.

Bloodworth ended his Facebook post saying: “I’m a nice guy who’s kind to animals, children and my grandmother. But don’t slander the Jews in the quiet coach.”

Don McLean’s Jewish wife of thirty years calls police after alleged antisemitic abuse

The Jewish wife of famed American singer Don McLean has claimed that he is antisemitic and violently abused her. Court documents show that the 70-year-old’s wife of 30 years, Patrisha McLean, has been granted a restraining order after claiming that her husband had attacked her and may have killed her had she not called the police.

Patrisha McLean’s handwritten declaration filed in Rockland District Court said: “For the first 10 years or so his rage was unfathomably deep and very scary — calling me horrible things like ‘hebe’ (I’m Jewish).” According to the statement, Don McLean controlled his rage until the incident on Monday when he allegedly lost control and threw the landline telephone to the floor when his wife tried to call the police. Patrisha McLean said she locked herself in the bathroom and called the police with her mobile, alleging: “He tried to break open the door and I feel he would have succeeded and killed me but for me telling him I was calling 911, which did deflate him,” she wrote.

Don McLean’s defence lawyer, Walter McKee, said: “Don denies making any ethnic slurs to his wife. As with many of the statements made in the request for a protection order, this statement is patently untrue.” Don McLean also commented, saying: “This last year and especially now have been hard emotional times for my wife, my children and me. What is occurring is the very painful breakdown of an almost 30-year relationship. Our hearts are broken and we must carry on. There are no winners or losers but I am not a villain. I may never recover from this but I will try and hope to continue to entertain you all as I always have. I ask God to give us the strength to find new happiness and I hope people will realise that this will all be resolved but I hope I will not be judged in this frantic media environment.”

Teachers indifferent to use of “Jew” as an insult in German schools, especially amongst Muslim pupils

German news platform Hessenschau has reported that “Jew” has become a common insult amongst pupils in schools across German.

One teacher and educational scientist, Türkan Kanbicak, notes that “You Jew”, “You spastic” and sexist insults are very common. She remarks that, while she determinedly challenges all such incidences, many of her colleagues appear indifferent and say nothing.

Arif Arslaner, founder of Kubi, an organisation that provides social work to seven schools in Frankfurt an Main, says the insults are particularly prevalent amounst Muslim students. He advises that it is important to distinguish between ideological hatred and students “merely” parroting hateful rhetoric to be provocative.

He notes the difference between Muslim and non-Muslim students is that the latter are less open, rather than less hateful. Kanbicak supports this view, noting that amongst students from more traditional German backgrounds, outright antisemitism is taboo and is more likely to be cloaked as criticism around Israel.

Football fans banned for three years for Nazi salutes and mimicking escaping gas

Two Southampton FC supporters who yelled abuse, mimicked the sound of hissing gas and made Nazi salutes at Tottenham Hotspur fans have been banned from attending matches for three years.

Thomas Flynn and Michael Haydon committed the offences at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium during a match on 19th December 2015.

Flynn, 22, of Yeovil Chase, Harefield, Southampton and Haydon, 23, of White Hart Lane, Cadnam, admitted a charge each of using threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour in what was deemed a religiously aggravated public order offence.

They were barred from attending games in Britain and abroad for three years after being convicted at Southampton Magistrates’ Court, where prosecutor Charles Nightingale had described how Flynn, Haydon and another man were seen shouting antisemitic abuse including “gas the Jews”.

Mr Nightingale said one of the Spurs fans reported: “There was a white male raising his right hand and finger below his nose and making hissing sounds imitating gas escaping.”

After a steward notified police, Haydon was arrested at the ground, while Flynn was detained nearby. The court heard that the third man was never identified.

Haydon had been drinking since that morning, said his lawyer Jane Hiatt, and admitted making hissing sounds but denied saluting and shouting abuse.

In mitigation she said of the season ticket holder, who had attended games since he was aged five: “This is very out of character and a blip. He’s horrified and ashamed.”

Nicola Attwood, for Flynn, said her client — who was sober — also admitted hissing but denied making salutes. She said: “He is disgusted with himself and that he deserves a ban and that the people would be gravely offended by his behaviour.”

Magistrate Victoria Parker sentenced them to a three-year banning order preventing them from attending games in Britain and requiring them to hand passports to police before major games abroad.

They were also handed a 12-week community order and curfew, banned from going within a mile of St Mary’s Stadium four hours before and after kick-off on matchdays, and ordered to pay £145 in costs.

She said: “This was a very serious matter and watching you during these court proceedings I think you know that and are very ashamed of what you did.”

Police investigating after Jewish shoppers pelted with gas canisters by neo-Nazis in London, Shomrim assisting victims

The Metropolitan Police Service is investigating an incident that took place this evening at around 19:45 in which three Jewish shoppers were subjected to antisemitic abuse in Tottenham Hale by three white men in a white pickup truck.

The three men shouted “Hitler is on the way to you, Heil Hitler, Heil Hitler, Heil Hitler” and threw small gas refill canisters towards the victims, two men and a woman.

Shomrim, the Jewish neighbourhood watch patrol, was called by the victims and is providing victim support. None of the victims were injured, but they were badly shaken by the experience.

The Metropolitan Police Service is now investigating. Anybody with information should call the police on 101 quoting reference CAD7955-06/01/16.

Jonathan Sacerdoti, Director of Communications at the Campaign Against Antisemitism, said: “This disturbing incident is a reminder of the abuse that many Jewish people experience all too often. It is vital that victims report all antisemitic attacks or incidents whenever they happen, and that the police take every report seriously, investigating and charging those responsible wherever possible.”

Shomrim volunteer Michael Blayer said: “This behaviour is appalling, the victims were innocent shoppers at the Tottenham Hale Retail Park, and they were targeted because they were visibly Jewish. The verbal abuse was disgusting, and small objects were thrown towards the victims, making them fear for their immediate safety. Shomrim are supporting the victims. The incident has been reported to the Metropolitan Police, I have absolute confidence in our local police that this will be thoroughly investigated. I encourage anyone who witnessed this incident or who may have experienced a similar incident to report it.”

Antisemitic stranger carrying a knife caught by chance outside Toronto synagogue

On Saturday at the synagogue at the Bernard Betel Centre in Toronto, a man wearing a swastika was found to be acting suspiciously and carrying a knife.

A woman on her way out of the centre saw a man carrying two large bags. She approached him and asked what his business was at the centre, at which point he hurled a book at her. The woman sounded the alarm and the man was surrounded by congregants.

One congregant noticed that the man, described as being in his sixties and of European origin, was wearing a swastika pin on his shirt. When challenged, he claimed that he was wearing it not to support Nazism but in support of socialism. He added that he came to the community centre to get money, and that the “rich Jews” want others to be poor.

Police arrived after thirty minutes at which point the man was searched and found to be in possession of a knife and a toy gun. The action taken by the police remains unclear, but it has been reported that the man will probably be taken for psychiatric evaluation.

London petrol station cashier reportedly tells Jewish customer “I hate you guys”

Campaign Against Antisemitism received a report that on 9th December, a Jewish man was subjected to antisemitic abuse at a petrol station in Stamford Hill, London, when he went to pay for his petrol. According to the report, as he finished paying for his petrol, the cashier said, “I hate you guys,” to which the victim responded, “What do you mean?” The cashier then allegedly answered: “I hate you and all you Jewish people.”

Campaign Against Antisemitism has discussed the matter with the Metropolitan Police Service, which has confirmed that they attended the incident and treated it as a racially or religiously aggravated incident intended to cause harassment, alarm or distress, which is an offence under the Public Order Act. However, the victim declined to give police a statement and no evidence was found to substantiate the allegation, so the police were left with no option other than to have a discussion with the alleged offender and close the case.

Shomrim, the volunteer Jewish neighbourhood watch patrol, was introduced to the victim and helped him to make a statement to the police, but due to the absence of a corroborating second witness statement, police action was still not possible.

A spokesman for Campaign Against Antisemitism said: “The police can only act when allegations are supported by evidence, including evidence from victims themselves wherever possible. Anybody who experiences antisemitism in person should first call the police, and then if it is safe to do so, they should try to capture video evidence using a smartphone and take the contact details of anyone else who witnessed the incident.”

Jewish wind farm developer in Vermont warned “You think no one knows you’re a Jew”

Police in Vermont are investigating an antisemitic voicemail left for a Jewish employee of a wind power firm. The anonymous message, left on the employee’s voicemail at the office of Iberdrola Renewables, says:

“You [name removed] are a Jew and you cannot wait to drive 28 stakes through a town full of free, white Christian men with guns, and unfortunately the way to attract free, white Christian men with guns to you is to try and take their homes. So, why don’t you go to Palestine [name removed] where you can shoot the feet of Palestinian soccer players, you can burn babies alive, you can rape Russian sex slaves and really overtly enjoy yourself rather than this covert activity in Vermont where you think no one knows you’re a Jew because you’re going to find out that they do. Bye-bye.”

The one-minute voicemail was left by a female caller on 27th October 2015, shortly after a public consultation meeting about Iberdrola’s proposed 28-turbine wind project, which if built, would be the largest in the state.

The Iberdrola employee discovered the message and reported it to the police, but they refused to act because the woman did not threaten her victim with violence leading the company’s lawyer to file a formal complaint.

UN guard dismissed for ordering American Jewish volunteers to leave immigrant camp on Greek island

A group of American Jewish volunteers for IsraAID has told Israel Today about an incident which saw them ordered to leave the transit camp where they had been trying to help migrants.

The incident began when volunteers working with other organisations swamped antisemitic at the Jewish women. At that point, a UN security guard arrived and, instead of quieting the antagonists, joined in the verbal assault of the Jewish women, demanding they leave the camp.

One of the group said: “The situation quickly deteriorated. The guard…yelled at me and said there was no place here for people like me. ‘Like me?’ I asked. ‘You mean Israeli? But I’m an American Jew.’ The guard replied by insisting that we [Jews] are all the same: murderers. He then threatened to arrest us if we didn’t leave the camp.”

An Israeli Arab member of IsraAID came to the defence of the women. He notified the camp administration of the incident, leading to the security guard’s dismissal.

The young Jewish women had traveled from the United States to volunteer with IsraAID, and were wearing the Israeli group’s shirts at the time of the incident.

Jewish man hears spectators at imam’s trial threatening to kill him but court guards refuse to help

Last month it was reported that a Jewish man, who was attending the public hearing against Imam Abdallah I in Berlin, Germany, was called a “Jewish pig” by another member of the public during the hearing.

Reports have now emerged that the victim responded by remarking, “Shut up, you terrorist”. Following this response, the attacker and his group spoke amongst themselves in Arabic. The Jewish man was able to make out some words, including “kill” and “outside”.

The victim attempted to alert the judge, who did not react. He was then told by guards to stop disrupting the proceedings. This spurred on the attackers, who began kicking his chair. The victim left the courtroom in fear and approached two court security guards who told him, “If you’re scared, go to the police.”

The victim told Die Welt that he has not reported the incident to the police, as they have been unresponsive to a past attack he reported. Two months ago, he was verbally abused and spat at by a gang while travelling the Berlin underground system. This is the fourth such attack he has experienced in Germany and he reported the case to the police. The police advised him they would watch security camera footage and contact him. He did not hear from them again.
